Target's credit card business ? Retail giant spins off credit cards for ...

Target / Retail

By Maureen Farrell

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? Target said Tuesday that it sold its consumer credit card portfolio to TD Bank for $5.9 billion.

That price tag matches the size of Target?s current credit card receivables (or what customers owe the retailer).

Under the terms of the deal, TD Bank has the right to underwrite, fund and manage risk for all future Target credit card receivables for the next seven years. Target will continue to service its current credit card customers and the deal will not affect Target?s ?5% REDcard Rewards? program.

Target will also continue to receive the majority of the profits from all credit card transactions, according to Susan Kahn, a spokesperson for Target. She declined to specify exactly how the profits would be split with TD Bank.

Target said it expects to record a pre-tax gain in the third quarter of $150 million. The company could also see additional gains of up to $450 million when the deal closes, which is expected early next year. But, looking ahead, the retailer said it expects to take a loss of roughly 10 cents a share during each of the four quarters after the deal is inked.

This acquisition will increase the U.S. footprint for the Canadian bank, also known as Toronto Dominion Bank. ?This asset acquisition aligns perfectly with our strategy, fits our risk profile and is a great complement to our high-growth credit card business,? said TD Bank Group CEO Ed Clark.

Meanwhile Target has been mired in a dispute with Visa and MasterCard over the so-called swipe fees it pays the credit card companies. Visa and MasterCard have agreed to pay retailers, including Target, $7.25 billion to settle charges that they illegally set prices for processing credit cards, but Target is one of many retailers saying that the settlement does not go far enough.

Shares of TD Bank fell 1% Tuesday, while Target?s stock was little changed.

Lawfare ? National Security Legal Issues in Last Night's Debate

By Benjamin Wittes
Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 6:42 AM

There were basically none. No discussion of Guantanamo, of habeas, of the NDAA, of interrogation, of military commissions, of targeted killing?and only the most cursory mention of drone strikes. This is quite a change from four years ago, when themes of restoring the rule of law, ending torture, and closing Guantanamo played big in Obama?s campaign?and in the debates with Sen. John McCain?and it?s a change as well from the Republican primaries, when candidates (including Romney) jockeyed with one another to double down on enhanced interrogation and keeping detainees out of U.S. courts. Why the muted role of these issues in today?s campaign?and in last night?s debate? I think the reason lies in this article that Ritika and I wrote for Commonweal magazine a few weeks ago:

This is not to say there are no differences between the parties on these issues. There are. But the differences have become subtle?even as the rhetoric has not. Issues that deeply divided the country as recently as four years ago have become matters of consensus, if not in the country at large, certainly in those parts of both political parties that will control the federal government under either Barack Obama or Mitt Romney.

This convergence creates anxieties on both left and right?on one side because it involves the institutionalization and legitimization of tactics like drone strikes and noncriminal detention that many people are uncomfortable with, and on the other side because it involves tempering the use of these tactics and the imposition of judicial review over wartime conduct. Both sets of anxieties have merit, but the convergence is nonetheless a great thing?it is a reflection of how much more sophisticated the American political system is in operation than in rhetoric. What?s more, whether we like the convergence or not, it is likely to continue whether President Obama gets re-elected or Mitt Romney takes his place.

. . .

Despite the instincts of each party to differentiate itself from the other, there is very little daylight between them anymore on the core questions of what powers the executive branch will wield against the enemy. The country?s political rhetoric?and occasionally fierce political combat?over national-security legal matters simply has not caught up with the broad bipartisan consensus that has developed on many of those issues. This consensus does not reflect many people?s specific moral judgments regarding the merits of the practices in question; relatively few people would draw the lines where our politics have settled. And legal and moral arguments can be made against every component of the settlement the two parties have reached. That is perhaps why the rhetoric has lagged. Yet while the old couple continues the same old argument, the kids have moved out and moved on. And we should be rolling our eyes over the theatrics.

I Am Adopted: My Forever Family

Father's Hand

?

Father of the fatherless and protector of widows

is God in his holy habitation.

God settles the solitary in a home;

Psalm 68:5-6a

?

More than ever before, in this society of broken marriages and single mothers, we are a nation of the fatherless.

In 2009 Unicef estimated that there are over two million orphans in the United States alone. Over two million orphans.

They are waiting. In foster homes, in orphanages. Waiting.

Waiting for fathers.

?A lot of times kids in adoptive situations know their mom, and have a connection, but sometimes dads are more elusive? God being a Father to the Fatherless means so much in filling the gaps of the father they never had. Being the strong rock in their life, the foundation to build on, and (a) male figure they can rely on as they seek relationship with Him.? ? Brittany, adoptive mother

Yet even those with fathers physically present in their lives may have wounds. Our earthly fathers are sinners too.

As adopted children of God, we know that He is our perfect Father, with only our best interests at heart, disciplining us when needed, but ever forgiving, always loving.

?

Orphans have a need for forever families which was put there by God Himself. It?s a need that we all have. To belong and be loved; to be part of a family.

God knows that we don?t do well alone (Genesis 2:18, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)

You and I, adopted into the family of God, have found our forever family. We are Jesus? brothers and sisters (Matt 12:50). We are now in a household of faith (Galatians 6:10).

When we choose Christ, God sets us in a new family, of which He is the perfect head.

?

?just as the Good Shepherd longs to see the return of just one who is lost, He desires to see the solitary and lonely in their own ?flock? with those who will love and care for them. ? Christina, adoptee and adoptive mother

I have seen the passion of adoptive parents. The desire they have to bring the children they know God has prepared for them into their forever families becomes a mission.

That passion is but a small reflection of the passion the Lord has for orphans.

You shall not afflict any widow or orphan. Exodus 22:22

He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. Deuteronomy 10:18

Learn to do good; seek justice, reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Isaiah 1:17

Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of the least of these, you did it unto Me. Matthew 25: 45

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. James 1:27

As people made in His image, we are to imitate our Heavenly Father. This passionate adoptive mom says it well:

?This passage doesn?t simply give an example of God?s ?character? if you will, but it is God leading by example?doing first what He expects His people, His church to do.? It gives us a concise ?road-map? to follow as to how we are to care for widows and orphans. We are not to just sit in the pews and talk about caring for them.? We have to go into the places where they are, which are Holy to God.? We have to actively seek them out, just as He does.? We have to meet them at the point of their need and lead them to God, who can meet each and every need they have. In doing so, they are part of a family of believers and are no longer alone.? ? Christina, adoptee and adoptive mom

As adopted children of God, we are no longer fatherless! He is the head of our forever family of brothers and sisters in Christ. And like Him, we must go into the world, serving the hurt and lonely, bringing them into our earthly and heavenly families to share in our eternal inheritance in Christ.

They are waiting.

Six killed in Guinea Bissau firefight: sources

BISSAU (Reuters) - Six people were killed in a gunbattle near Guinea-Bissau's capital overnight in an apparent counter-coup attempt, sources said on Sunday.

The West African state, a hub for international cocaine traffickers, is in the midst of a messy recovery after the army overthrew the government and derailed elections in April.

"It appears to have been a failed counter-coup," one diplomatic source said of the fighting, asking not to be named. "The military is checking vehicles around Bissau, mostly vehicles that are leaving," he said.

Military officials said the fighting erupted overnight near an airforce base just outside the city, adding six "rebels" were killed and several others detained.

Some of the attackers were from an ethnic group, Djolla, common in neighboring Senegal's southern Casamance region, they said, asking not to be named.

They declined to comment on whether the attack targeted General Antonio Indjai who led the April coup and is believed to have a residence near the airforce base.

Several Bissau officials, including election front-runner and former prime minister Carlos Gomes Junior, went into exile in Portugal after the April coup.

Other political and military allies of Gomes Junior sought refuge in Gambia.

Guinea Bissau's transitional government, charged with setting new elections, has backing from West African regional block ECOWAS but it lacks the full support of the United Nations, the European Union and the CPLP grouping of Portuguese-speaking countries who say it remains under army influence.

Shop off-season for major home improvements | Farm and Dairy ...

?

NEW YORK ? An often overlooked side-effect of the recession is that many people cannot afford to move and have decided to stick with the home they have and make desired improvements.

Thanks to off-season discounts, some months of the year may be better than others for renovations. The home improvement industry is not much different than any other. When demand is high, prices are generally at their peak. When demand is low, prices are lowered to entice shoppers to buy.

Shop smart

Right now, many homeowners may be thinking of certain improvements, such as the installation of a pool or deck, or even replacing an air conditioning system in advance of the warm weather. But it could be financially savvy to wait until the warm weather is gone to do so.

Many pool companies and stores discount their inventory considerably after September. That?s because this time of year in most of the country is when the weather starts to change and people are less likely to think about a dip in the pool

Furthermore, in an effort to capitalize on both the summer and winter seasons, many pool stores double as Christmas tree and accessory outlets come the colder months. That means they?ll need to clear out their showrooms and stock areas of pools prior to delivery of Christmas merchandise. You may land a considerable discount on the pool package.

Plus, if you have room in a garage or shed to store the pool equipment and assembled materials, you can wait until the next season to hire an installer to set up the pool when you desire.

Hot and cold

As you are thinking about turning down the thermostat and enjoying a blast of cool air-conditioning, it might be wise to think about the performance of your furnace, too. While HVAC professionals and home improvement chains could be charging top dollar for a new air conditioning system, they may offer discounts on furnaces because they?re simply not in demand this time of year.

If you find an affordable furnace, store the furnace until the time is right to have it installed.

Remodel in late December. The holiday season tends to be a slow time for home-improvement contractors simply because most homeowners are thinking more about shopping and entertaining than knock-down, tear-out jobs. Waiting until the end of the year for some major renovations could be advantageous.

The spring and summer are prime times for outdoor entertaining, so the addition of decks or elaborate landscaping may come at an elevated price. However, once autumn arrives, the same services may be much cheaper, depending on the job and if the contractor can secure materials at a discounted price.

If you can hold off on that new deck or patio until after September, it may be in your best interest. However, if a winter installation is in your design, you may find yourself actually paying more in labor costs if inclement weather delays the installation.

Other tips

Explore wintertime reductions on air conditioning systems.

New appliance models released could mean year-end reductions on that model year.

Purchase bulk topsoil and other landscaping materials in the winter when this industry is slow.

Many pests enter a dormancy during the winter, so exterminators may discount for termite reduction during the winter and early spring.

Fireplace installation or chimney masonry work could be discounted during the summer months.

The spring season is an ideal time for roofing projects, although some contractors will work in the winter, too. Roofing companies are often tied up during the summer months and may ask for premium charges.

Keep in mind that summer is a prime time for any and all improvements. Beat the prices and the wait time by shopping off-season for your renovations.

Harvest time | Cook's County: Urban Stories of Food and Life

Harvest time

Despite a hundred mostly-green tomatoes that are being eaten one at a time by mice, our garden has been a joy this summer.? We got dozens of adorable little carrots, gorgeous lettuces and arugula, rhubarb, of course, by the several pounds, and lots of green peppers and poblanos.? The marigolds we grew from seeds to keep away the bugs have grown gigantic on woody stems, leaning over into other people's kale. ? Now if only I knew the flower to chase away mice.

It is harvest-time, it is past harvest-time.? Still you note your gardens are producing if indeed you have a garden: these plants push it till the bitter end, tomatoes still dangling from sagging vines, leaves gone yellow and crispy and still the tomatoes are there.? Pepper plants still producing flowers, absurdly.? Marigolds getting thicker and thicker and oranger and oranger until the whole thing seems like it's going to blow.? They must know what's coming--winter, the end.? So they're throwing every last bit of wild life-force they have left, throwing it out like sparks, bright orange and smoking, ephemeral, until the lights burn out.

I love this about a garden.? About living green things.? They really go for it, they go nuts, they live while they're living.

And best of all, you get to eat what they work so hard at creating.

Here are four garden stories, with recipes.

But It Was Labelled Eggplant

Kay more or less runs the community garden adjacent to her south side high rise.? It is a beautiful place, roomy and quiet, with grassy paths between each patch, a blend of flower and vegetable gardens, and a tidy composter in the way back.??? Indoors there is a shared garden tool room; "well-organized" doesn't even begin to describe this immaculate space.? Another room holds everyone's boxes of their own supplies, and again, neatness rules here.? Outdoors there is a wide expanse of open lawn with the occasional bench, and 40 private patches plus 2 which are shared.? Several gardeners put plants in the shared patches, used for vegetables mostly this year.

Vista homes community garden

One of those plants was a bit of a mystery for awhile.? "They told us it was an eggplant at the Hyde Park Garden Fair," Kay said as she showed me around the garden.?? "But as we began to see the leaves, we knew it wasn't an eggplant."

"Mrs. Hano, she's 94, our oldest gardener, she has eggplants."

eggplants

She showed me more eggplants in the back...

more eggplants

...by "our gooseberry collection."? My heart skipped a beat at the mention of gooseberries.? Gooseberries are old school.? "Do you do anything with these?" I asked as we waded through the 6 foot tall bushes.? "Every year I put them up for my friend whose plants these are," Kay told me.? "But gooseberries come in the spring, nothing left to see now."

Well that not-an-eggplant-after-all grew taller, much taller.? Past squash, past cabbage, past kale.? The leaves grew broad.? The gardeners wondered.

collards

My neighbor and garden-sharer Shawn saw them and knew.? It was collards: thick broad leaves, fan-like, springing out all the way up a tall stalk.? He also knew how he wanted to prepare them.? So he asked for a few leaves, took them home, and subjected them to a treatment for kale: crispy chips.

chopping collards

The end result definitely retains that distinctive collard flavor with only olive oil and salt to compete.? It would seem healthier to eat them if they weren't so addictive.? When Shawn made them they were bright green, salty, and to my son's mind, like eating autumn leaves right off the ground.? Tasty leaves.

plate of collard chips

I made them again because they were so delicious and because I wanted to try chopping the pieces in small rectangles, like fritos, to see if I could get a less leafy experience.? For sure they were more beautiful Shawn's way, and they were certainly more of a chip-like experience my way.? If you want your crispy collard chips artsy, cut them large; if you want them junk-foody, cut them small and square.? My daughter and I ate an entire pan with no help from anyone.

The high-rise community garden was absolutely a delight, as was talking to Kay, collard-supplier, gardener, organizer, baker, gooseberry jam maker.

Is Oregano Supposed to Taste Like a Slap Across the Face?

In our community garden space we inherited two plants, two giant plants.? Rhubarb, which you can read about here and here, and oregano.? When the oregano was bushy, but before it had flowered, I grabbed armloads and proceeded to wash it and hang it inside my house upside-down from ceiling beams, window frames, and door frames.

drying oregano

This may sound charming, but trust me, the effect was a? little more unkempt garden shed than French provincial kitchen.? My family wondered how long they were going to have to duck their heads going from the dining room to the stairs.? I wondered too, never having dried oregano before.? I kept it there all summer until I considered the threat of hibernating insects finding a nice winter home in the bunches.? I cut them down and crunched off the leaves into a large ziploc bag, removed the woody twigs, rolled the leaves with a rolling pin, and bottled them up adorably for my family, and for friends.

Then I tried a little pinch.

Suffice to say, this was not your Spice Islands oregano.

It practically burns going down, this oregano.? It makes me worried that it's not actually oregano at all, maybe it's nightshade, or hemlock, or some other evil herb of fairy-tale fame.? I only need use the tiniest pinch in whatever I'm cooking, and it goes a long way.

So far it's graced, or dared to destroy, some cabbage soup, a chicken pot pie, and a pot of stock.? Since we have all survived the consumption of these dishes I think we're not actually dealing with evil fairy tale herbs, just an occasional robust slap across the face.

What I Was Waiting For All Along

When last we spoke of them, my poblanos were thread-wispy seedlings being shuttled from sunny windowsill to sunny windowsill.

Look at them now, back in the windowsill:

poblanos

This, my friends, in case you don't know what you're looking at, is a miracle.

They're robust and sizable and gorgeous, actual edible delicious peppers that came from a seed the size of a crumb that you'd hardly bother sweeping up off the floor. Well anyway I would hardly bother.

I made them into a big platter of of chiles rellenos and we ate them with our garden-plot sharing neighbors, just as planned way back in April when the poblanos were just a slender reed of hope.? Neither of us--the poblanos nor I--knew what sort of summer lay ahead, what sort of dry punishing heat would characterize the whole growing season.

Fortunately for poblanos, they love that weather.? The hotter the better, and they don't even care too much about being thirsty.

And most happily of all, these peppers all seem to be mild, kind poblanos, not the evil, trickily too-hot variety.? You never know when you're going to get those--either in the garden, the market, or the restaurant.? This time, we didn't.

We got golden-fried, queso-filled, roasted poblanos and it was exactly what I was waiting for all along.

There Are Two Kinds of People in The World.? Those Who Get Chutney, and Those Who Don't.

David is a south side home gardener with a single 8 foot by 3 foot raised bed.? He built it several years ago and the bounty has reached nearly ridiculous levels.? This year they planted and harvested: yellow pear tomatoes, gathered by the thousands, peppers--serranos, jalapenos, and poblanos, melons, cucumbers, zucchini and summer squash, concord grapes, raspberries, blackberries, and red currants, and yes folks, an apple tree.? I actually can't even picture this, and since I offer no photograph you'll just have to use your imagination.

He buys most of his plants from an enormous greenhouse and nursery an hour south of Chicago in Grant Park, IL called Woldhuis Farms.? It is a long way to go for plants, David admitted, but they are just better than he can find around here.

What could he possibly do with all this bounty?? Beyond eating it, he cans.

As readers of Cook's County know, I am a little phobic about canning and am fascinated by anyone brave enough to do it.? This is not how David looks at the matter.?? He comes by his canning honestly, coming from a serious canning family.? Preserving, freezing, and canning were a way of life for David's grandmother.? She? used to have a little shed outside just for home canned good storage--shelves and shelves full, which the family ate all year long, fresh summer produce all year.? David especially remembers the green beans--something many canners won't do today at all because of the higher risk associated with them.? When his parents got married, his grandparents' wedding gift to them was a deep freeze filled with home-grown, put up produce.? What an awesome present!? Perhaps because of her mother's overacheiving awesomeness in this regard, or simply due a diminished necessity for continuing the work, David's mom preserved less food.? Mainly she would do beets, David says, "when she was feeling nostalgic."

The tradition carries on now with the grandson.? David freezes some of his produce, cans a few things.? Mainly a few jams and some chutneys.? Such as, for your consideration, this green tomato chutney.

chutney jars

It's the second year he's made this, and it's exactly what he wanted it to be.? He wanted it to be like ploughman's lunch pickles.? Ploughman's lunch? you ask.? So did I.? You know, the English rustic lunch of cheese, bread, and pickles or chutney that can be found in the rustic English working class pub, or here, in hipper Britishy joints.? It's not a horseradishy chutney that he's after, it's more of a vinegary one, and this green tomato chutney is it.? In this batch he mixed three types of vinegar: malt, sherry, and apple cider--mostly because he needed them all to get enough for the recipe.

What do you do with this?? Who eats it?? How do you eat it?? The questions come pouring forth.? Because I am one of those people who just don't really get chutney.? David admits: many don't.? But those who do--love this.? It's best eaten with bread and a strong cheddar--just like a ploughman's lunch.?? And if you're lucky enough to be on the receiving end of David's green tomato chutney, but benighted enough not to know what to do with it, now you do.

?

Crispy Collard Chips
This recipe was adapted from a Food and Wine kale treatment.?

Preheat the oven to 275 or 300 degrees, no hotter.? Wash your collard leaves and dry them well.? Remove the center stem and chop the leaves up as you wish.? Place them on a cookie sheet and brush olive oil on both sides of each piece.? Sprinkle generously with kosher salt.? (Well, I like kosher salt best.? You can use whatever you have.)? Pop your pan, or pans, in the oven, and let them cook for 20 minutes or so.? Keep a close eye on them, though, because they can turn from glorious green to an unappetizing brown very quickly.? Remove frompan and eat them all at once, feeling virtuous.

?

Chiles Rellenos
To me there is only one way to fix this dish.? Do not overthink it, do not overdo it.? Stick with the basic treatment and you will never go wrong.

10 poblanos
1/2 lb. queso, Mexican white cheese, cut in finger-size pieces
flour, salt, pepper
3 eggs, separated
oil for frying, about 1/2" depth in the pan

First, the tedious part.? Roast the chiles.? Put them under the broiler, turn frequently and watch like a hawk; or a 450 degree oven for a longer time, flipping occasionally to get all sides roasted.? Pull the roasted peppers off the pan and place in a large ziploc or paper bag, zip or roll up.? You are letting the peppers sweat it out, and their skins will ostensibly be easy to remove after this treatment.? Give them 15 minutes or so to cool off.

Take them out and under lightly running water, laboriously remove the skins.? When you've finished this, now cut a tiny lengthwise slit in each pepper and run the water inside to get out the seeds.? If you like to play Russian roulette with poblano seeds, leave them in and then you can worry about whether they will be too hot to eat.? I hate those pesky seeds, so I take the extra time to remove them.? At the top of the poblano, a large clump of seeds is connected very ferociously to the stem, so remove this part with a knife.

After ten of these you may be ready to give up and go take a nap.? If you're not up to this kind of thing, and I'm not, ever, except for those precious poblanos I raised from seeds, then you can buy very nice roasted seeded whole peppers at the grocery store.? I'm not above this.

For a break from your peppers you may now beat the egg whites until stiff peaks.? Stir up the yolks but otherwise set them aside for the moment.

Fill each pepper with a few of your sticks of cheese so they're nice and plump.? When the whole plate is done, sprinkle them with a few tablespoons of flour that you've seasoned with a 1/2 teaspoon of salt and several grinds of pepper.

Heat the oil in the pan--fairly hot, you're going to be doing a shallow fry and you want to achieve golden brown.

Now fold the yolks into the whites and turn them into a large shallow bowl.? Gently roll each stuffed poblano in the batter until it's covered.? This is a complete pain in the ass.? I'm just saying.? Don't give up, though.? Drink a swig of wine and carry on.

Put each one in the hot oil as you complete it.? When you have a pan full--say, three or four--stop the dipping for now and turn your attention to cooking them evenly.? Turn carefully when golden, till you have golden all around.? Remove each poblano when you've reached that, and place them on paper towels to drain a bit.? Serve that pan full, then repeat the process with the rest.

These are best eaten right fresh out of the pan with your favorite salsa and a tortilla.?? So someone else will have to keep cooking as you eat the first round.

?

Green Tomato Chutney
David loosely follows this recipe from the Southern Food category at About.com. As mentioned above he tweaks with the vinegars, and did not use apples.

2 1/2 pounds firm green tomatoes, about 6 cups diced
1 cup golden raisins
1 cup chopped onion
1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, firmly packed
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups cider vinegar
1 tablespoon mixed pickling spices
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 tablespoon chopped crystallized ginger

Trim the stem and blossom ends from tomatoes and cut into 3/4-inch dice (you should have about 6 cups). Combine all ingredients in a heavy kettle; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and cook for about 1 hour, until thickened.

Spoon chutney into hot sterilized jars, leaving 1/4-inch head space; wipe jar rims. Cover at once with metal lids, and screw on bands. Process for 15 minutes in a boiling-water canner.? Be sure you listen for the schwoop.

The lost boys and girls of Britain

Twenty-one years ago, a young boy from Sheffield disappeared without trace on the Greek island of Kos. Today, British police began digging for his body. Sadly, he is far from the only one.
Ben Needham is one of a number of British youngsters who are missing presumed murdered. The vast majority disappear here, but the highest profile such disappearance over probably the past thirty years has been that of Madelaine McCann. She was abducted from a holiday apartment in Portugal on the evening of May 3, 2007. The case became a cause c?l?bre for a number of reasons, including the slightly unusual babysitting arrangements of her parents.

Because so little information was known or released, the tabloids, especially in Britain, began inventing their own. This proved to be an expensive exercise due to three separate libel actions. One was brought by Robert Murat, a British ex-pat who lived locally. He spoke fluent Portuguese, so offered to help with the translating. He ended up having the finger pointed at him and being accused of all sorts of other things. The truth is that Murat was a divorcee who had a young daughter about the same age as Madelaine; the girl lived with his ex-wife, her mother. Murat empathised with the McCanns and was trying to be helpful. Another case of no good deed going unpunished.

One of the early pictures released of Madeleine McCann who went missing in Portugal while on vacation with her parents in 2007.

The parents of Madelaine McCann and their friends, the Tapas Seven, also brought successful libel actions. To this day, there has been no confirmed sighting of Madelaine, and though her parents have obviously not given up hope, the girl is almost certainly dead, and was probably murdered within hours of her abduction. It would be unkind to speculate further. Still probably the highest profile case of this nature in England if not Britain is that of Genette Tate who literally disappeared off the face of the Earth in April 1978 from near her West Country home, the village of Aylesbeare. Her bicycle was found in the road, and nothing else. She was thirteen at the time, a bit too old for the man who has become and remains the chief suspect in her murder, predator and serial killer Robert Black. There has been serious talk about putting Black on trial for Genette's murder, but even a conviction would probably not solve anything. To date he has remained silent as he has about his other, later crimes. August this year saw the death of Winnie Johnson. Mrs Johnson was 78, which is a fair age, but she went to her grave without the comfort of knowing the whereabouts of her 12 year old son, Keith. She knew for a fact he was dead, and that he is buried somewhere on the windswept moors of Yorkshire, but all attempts to locate his body, including by his killers, have been in vain. Keith is one of five acknowledged victims of the Moors Murderers: Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. Hindley died in hospital ten years ago, though still in prison custody. Ian Brady who is classed as insane but is both rational and lucid, will likewise never be released. An official release

April Jones, the five year old girl who was snatched off the street as she played near her home in Machynlleth, Wales.

Meanwhile, the hunt for Ben Needham goes on. The police are being typically tight lipped but clearly they have received new information about the disappearance of this young boy, who was less than two years old when he was apparently kidnapped from this family's holiday home on Kos. Finally, another hunt goes on, this one for a young girl who we can say for certain was kidnapped, and who is now believed by the police to be dead. April Jones was five years old, and was seen getting into a white van by her young friends near her home at Machynlleth, Wales. A local man has been charged with her abduction and murder, but the search for April, or more realistically for her body, goes on. April suffered from cerebral palsy, and needed constant medication.

Tips For A Successful Internet Marketing ... - Business Directory listings

The Internet is constantly changing, which means you should constantly change the ways you use it to market your products. To do that, you should be sure to keep track of new marketing tips and tricks. Here are some great pieces of advice that will help give your old Internet marketing techniques a boost.

Your banner advertising needs to be effective, meaning that your ads should have a wide variety of aesthetics. Every person has different tastes, so offering multiple banner advertisements will allow you to capture the attention of as many people as possible. This tactic maximizes banner advertising success every time.

Start a blog about your business. Often times, you can do this free of cost and can gain business this way. You will get an increase in traffic to your website this way, along with many other benefits. You have nothing to lose by trying this method out, to see if it works.

To remind visitors to come back to your site or sites, consider offering blog posts by e-mail subscription. Many people prefer to receive content in their inboxes, since they don?t always remember to regularly visit every website that interests them. Allowing people to subscribe to your blog posts will keep them reading what you have to say without the need for you to write extra newsletter content, and it will also keep your business fresh in people?s minds.

If you start an online club on your website, you can offer free monthly incentives to your loyal customers. Joining the club should be an easy process, even as simple as signing up for a monthly e-zine. No matter what route your customers will take to join it, be sure to make membership full of as many goodies as you can provide.

Offer more collectible incentives to your customer?s purchase to get repeat buys more often. When you offer something free that is collectible or part of a series, you attract those customers who love to collect entire sets. that leads to more purchases for you and more pieces for your customers to collect.

Let?s approach this topic from the side of a brick and mortar business without much of a presence online. Internet marketing has transformed the way business is handled, and in today?s world, the internet handles much of today?s business. If you have not already started marketing your business on the internet, now is the time to do so and maximize potential profits.

If you start a thread on somebody?s forum or leave a post on your blog, make sure you address every legitimate response you receive. Skipping someone?s response can cause you to lose them as a reader, especially if you?re responding to other people but not them. It only takes a few minutes and it makes your visitors feel good.

A successful internet marketer knows his customers, especially his best ones. Pay attention to your customers? preferences. Find out if they use Facebook or lesser known social networking sites, such as FourSquare or Tumblr. Are they enticed by free shipping, special offers or clearance items? What forums or blogs do they use? The more familiar you are with your customers? inclinations, the easier it will be for you to reach them and motivate them.

Describe your product as an investment to emphasize value. You can also use success stories and testimonials to emphasize how your product has changed the lives of other people who have purchased it. Your customers want to feel that the money they spend on your product will continue to benefit them in the future.

The Internet may help you reach a wide audience, but that doesn?t mean you shouldn?t change your techniques. Employing different tips and tricks will help your marketing remain fresh instead of feeling stale. Apply the advice in this article the next time you?re looking for a new and interesting way to market your goods or services.

Aggressive ads keep abortion in campaign spotlight

NEW YORK (AP) ? Though Barack Obama and Mitt Romney rarely tackle the topic of abortion head-on, the void is being filled by rival advocacy groups targeting swing states with ads depicting one or the other candidate as an extremist in his stance on the divisive issue.

Obama, according to the National Right to Life Committee, is "the most pro-abortion president this country has ever seen." Another anti-abortion group, the Susan B. Anthony List, is running anti-Obama TV ads titled "Abortion Radical."

From the other side, groups supporting legal access to abortion, as well as the Obama campaign itself, depict Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, as eager to ban most abortions as part of a Republican "war on women." The GOP ticket "is extremely dangerous to women's health," says Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Numerous polls indicate that abortion and other hot-button social issues aren't top priorities for most Americans as they worry about jobs and health care. Yet abortion is a visceral subject for some voters ? and the extent to which they turn out to vote, and perhaps sway wavering acquaintances, could make a difference in pivotal swing states.

There's extra intensity this year because Obama and Romney ? reflecting their party platforms ? are so polarized in regard to abortion.

Obama believes decisions about abortion should be left to women and their doctors. He affirmed this outlook during his acceptance speech at the Democratic convention, where the prime-time speakers included Keenan and Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Romney opposes abortion except in cases of rape, incest and threat to the mother's life, and says the Supreme Court should repeal the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a nationwide right to abortion. He also would end federal aid to Planned Parenthood, which is a major provider of abortion and contraception.

"There are such sharp differences between the two candidates, it's not surprising the advocacy groups are so engaged," said Mark Rozell, a political science professor at George Mason University in the swing state of Virginia. "They think other voters must feel the same way."

Planned Parenthood, through its political action affiliates, has spent more on this election than any in the past ? more than $12 million, with about half the money going for TV ads in Florida, Virginia, Ohio and other battleground states.

Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said a large chunk of the funds had been donated by new contributors eager to fight back against Republican efforts to restrict abortion at the state and federal level.

"People have woken up and said, 'Not only are they serious, but they're close to imposing their will on the women of America,'" Laguens said.

Among the biggest spenders on the anti-abortion side is the Susan B. Anthony List. Along with its political action committees, it has reported more than $3 million in expenditures, including TV ads in Ohio, Virginia, Florida and Colorado.

The group's president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, said the ads seek to depict Obama as an extremist in regard to abortion and to woo undecided, socially conservative Democrats, including Hispanics.

"It's hard to argue that the 'war on women' theme has stuck," Dannenfelser said. "The gender gap has closed since the first debate, and the women's vote is the most fluid I've seen."

Some of the swing states experienced controversies earlier this year that put a spotlight on abortion even before the presidential race heated up.

In Ohio, the Legislature held hearings on a bill that would impose the nation's most severe abortion restrictions, outlawing most abortions after the first detectable fetal heartbeat, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy. The bill stalled, but its supporters hope to revive it after the election.

Janet Folger Porter, president of the conservative advocacy group Faith2Action, is a leading backer of the so-called "heartbeat bill" and also released a video this month denouncing Obama.

"You can question where Gov. Romney stands, but there's no question where President Obama stands on life," says Porter, depicting Obama's stance as "pro-death."

Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL's Ohio affiliate, said debate over the heartbeat bill raised voter awareness of abortion-related issues.

"This is really on a lot of Ohioans' minds," she said. "They want to know where the candidates stand."

The issue also is figuring in Ohio's Senate race, with Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown, a firm supporter of legal access to abortion, and Republican challenger Josh Mandel, an advocate of outlawing it.

In Virginia, there was a surge of protests earlier this year when the Republican-controlled Legislature passed a bill requiring women to undergo pre-abortion sonograms. Initially, it mandated a vaginally invasive procedure, drawing charges from female Democratic legislators that it amounted to "state mandated rape."

The provision was removed at Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell's urging after the bill was mocked on national TV comedy shows. But the controversy had staying power ? a Democratic legislative candidate in North Carolina has run a TV ad in which she brandishes a transvaginal wand in an effort to capitalize on the anti-abortion views of her GOP opponent.

Abortion also has been a prominent issue in Missouri's Senate race since Republican candidate Todd Akin ? a foe of abortion ? remarked in August that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in instances of "legitimate rape." He later called the comment a mistake, but Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill has aired anti-Akin ads featuring testimonials from women who said they were raped, including one who describes herself as a "pro-life" Republican.

Rozell, the George Mason professor, said the abortion debate could play a crucial role in the election even as the economy remains the paramount concern.

"The social issues do matter to a significant portion of voters, especially certain swing voters who might see a candidate's position on abortion as a marker," Rozell said. "Can they trust this candidate to govern responsibly, or is he beholden to an extreme element in his political party?"

He said Romney faces a tricky balancing act as he tries to woo middle-of-the road women without antagonizing religious conservatives who already are wary because Romney supported abortion rights in the past.

Last week, Romney told The Des Moines Register's editorial board that there wasn't any abortion-related legislation he planned to pursue as president. A spokeswoman quickly clarified his remark, and Romney told reporters: "I'll be a pro-life president."

This week, Romney's campaign released a TV ad suggesting the candidate believes abortion "should be an option" in certain cases.

In the ad, a woman says she'd heard Romney's position on abortion and birth control "seemed a bit extreme." She says she'd learned Romney doesn't oppose contraception and believes abortion should be available in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is at stake.

Dawn Laguens of Planned Parenthood said the ad was "designed to deceive women."

"The Romney team knows that Mitt Romney's real agenda for women's health is deeply unpopular ? ending safe and legal abortion, ending Planned Parenthood's preventive care that millions of people rely on," she said.

Open house to focus on traffic, businesses on Tumwater road ...

CHELSEA KROTZER | Staff writer ? Published October 19, 2012 Modified October 19, 2012

An open house to discuss traffic issues and attracting businesses on a 1.2 mile-section of Capitol Boulevard in Tumwater is set for the end of the month.

IF YOU GO

What: The third of four open houses about plans for a section of Capitol Boulevard.

When: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 30.

Where: Peter G. Schmidt Elementary School cafeteria, 225 Dennis St. SE., Tumwater.

WHAT?S NEXT

A fourth open house discussing design standards, development and zoning will be held later.

The city hired a consulting firm in February to look at both those issues between Southgate Shopping Center and Israel Road. A good chunk of the consultant?s time has been spent on traffic.

?It?s taking a little bit longer than we had hoped,? said David Ginther, senior planner with the City of Tumwater. ?We knew it would suck up a lot of time, energy and money on this.?

The Trosper Road intersection has been a major area of concern, as well as issues with vehicles coming and going from Interstate 5.

Both those issues are outside the current study?s realm.

?We are doing as much as we can to help the businesses and residents along the corridor, but trying to fix the Trosper Road-Capitol Boulevard intersection, that would taken an entirely different study and be very expensive,? Ginther said.

Most other traffic issues occur at the north end, he said.

Proposed ideas include constructing a parallel road for residents and customers giving them better access to businesses without dealing with the thoroughfare.

?We?d have to be careful with impacts on the neighborhoods there,? Ginther said.

Questions also have come up on what to do with a vacated state Department of Transportation site that is set to be redeveloped.

A row of homes behind the property also is up for discussion.

?It?s up in the air what the community wants to do with these homes,? Ginther said.

Options have included leaving the homes as is, finding funding to buy them out or having a developer try to buy them out.

The consultant also is looking for ways to ease traffic issues for those trying to cross multiple lanes to get to businesses such as Thompson?s Furniture, Starbucks and Arby?s.

Something Can Go Up in Price Yet Fall in Value - Chicago Gold and ...

People always ask me if I think the price of gold will go up. I reply back to them that the price of gold is not as relavent as the value of gold. Does the price of gold matter if the dollar is worth zero? Dollars are just one factor.

Not too long ago, you could exchange 1,000 dollars for one ounce of gold. Now it's about $1700 dollars for one ounce of gold.

What matters is what can gold buy in terms of something else of value. Dollars to gold exchange is just one measure of gold's value. You also compare over time how many ounces of gold you will need to buy median income family home, or a barrel of oil, or a bale of wheat, or some Apple stocks.

Leading bone marrow transplant expert recommends significant change to current practice

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? One of the world's leading bone marrow transplant experts is recommending a significant change to current transplant practice for patients who need marrow or adult stem cells from an unrelated donor to treat hematologic malignancies. Fred Appelbaum, M.D., director of the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, asserts that bone marrow -- not circulating, peripheral blood, which is the current norm -- should be the source for unrelated donor adult stem cells for most patients who require a transplant. The reason: because there is less incidence of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), which can be a debilitating side effect of transplantation.

Appelbaum called for the change in an Oct. 18 editorial in The New England Journal of Medicine in response to a new study, published in the same issue, which compared survival rates and side effects of treating patients with hematopoietic adult stem cells derived from bone marrow versus circulating peripheral blood. The study found a higher incidence of chronic GVHD -- 53 percent when peripheral blood was the source of stem cells for transplant -- versus 41 percent when bone marrow is the source.

"For the majority of unrelated transplants following a standard high-dose preparative regimen, bone marrow should be used since survival is equivalent with the two sources but the incidence of chronic graft-versus-host disease, which can be a debilitating complication, is significantly less with marrow," Appelbaum wrote.

GVHD is a common side effect in people who receive cells from an unrelated donor. It occurs when the transplanted cells recognize the recipient's tissues as foreign and attack the tissues. This can cause a variety of problems, including skin rashes, liver problems and diarrhea. Chronic GVHD can develop any time between three months and three years after the transplant and can range from mild to serious in intensity.

Appelbaum said that stem cells derived from peripheral blood should only be used for the minority of patients in whom the benefits outweigh the risks. These include patients in need of rapid engraftment, such as those with life-threatening infections, or patients at high risk for graft rejection, such as those who receive reduced-intensity conditioning that does not include intensive chemotherapy.

For the past 10 years peripheral blood has been the norm as a source of matched related and matched unrelated adult stem cells for transplant because, despite the higher risk of GVHD, they are easier to harvest from the donor, they can be stimulated to grow in large numbers prior to harvesting, and they engraft, or set up shop, quickly inside the recipient's body.

The potential impact if such a practice change were widely implemented is large. Currently, about 75 percent of unrelated donor transplants are done using stem cells that are collected from the peripheral blood of donors. About 70 percent of all patients who undergo a life-saving transplant to treat blood cancers such as leukemia require an unrelated donor. Collecting adult stem cells from bone marrow is a more invasive process than collecting them from the bloodstream.

According to Appelbaum, about 5,500 unrelated donor transplants were performed in the United States last year. More than 20 million potential unrelated donors are typed and listed in registries in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

The study that compared the two sources of adult stem cells was the first randomized trial of its kind to compare the two sources of cells. It was led by former Hutchinson Center transplant physician Claudio Anasetti, M.D., who is now at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla. It found no difference in two-year survival, faster engraftment and less graft failure, but a significant increase in chronic GVHD, when patients were transplanted with stem cells derived from peripheral blood.

"While this study should change practice, it will be interesting to see if it really does," Appelbaum wrote. "The benefits of peripheral blood are seen early, under the watchful eyes of the transplant physician, while the deleterious effects occur late, often after the patient has left the transplant center."
