Obama marks Iraq War anniversary

As his Republican rivals kick off the final stretch of their campaign, President Obama today will publicly remind voters of his record as commander-in-chief, traveling to a Texas military base to thank service members and commemorate a war he brought to an end.

Obama will visit Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, home to Army units that deployed in the Iraq War, to hold a private roundtable discussion with service members and deliver an address to mark the two-year anniversary of the end of U.S. combat operations Iraq. The last American troops withdrew from the country in December 2011.

The trip, billed as an official White House visit, is also an opportunity for Obama to highlight what is one of the signature achievements of his first term and the fulfillment of a popular campaign promise from 2008.

"His record is a substantive record when it comes to the profound commitment and decision to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home. And his record is substantial when it comes to supporting our veterans," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Thursday of the trip.

The president will emphasize "the effort that his administration is continuing to make and steps that the administration is continuing to take that are essential to ensure that those who fought for us overseas are being fought for by us here at home," Carney added.

Obama has repeatedly over the past three years sought to remind Americans of his pledge to bring the increasingly unpopular war to a close, hoping to leverage public support for his leadership on the issue into a boost in the polls.

After returning from his first visit to Fort Bliss on Aug. 31, 2010, Obama delivered a nationally-televised Oval Office address to declare Operation Iraqi Freedom over. In October 2011, he took to the White House briefing room to herald a planned complete drawdown of U.S. troops from Iraq by year's end. Three months later, Obama hailed the official end of war in Iraq on a visit to Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

"This is an extraordinary achievement, nearly nine years in the making," Obama said in December. "And today, we remember everything that you did to make it possible. ? Hard work and sacrifice. Those words only begin to describe the cost of this war and the courage of the men and women who have fought it. We know well the heavy cost of this war."

Difference Between Ecommerce and E business | Difference Between

Ecommerce vs Ebusiness
?

In today?s technically developed world, most of us use the internet for a variety of things, which include the purchase of goods and services and conduct business on the internet. Ecommerce and E business are both ways of conducting business online and, therefore, quite similar to each other. The terms Ecommerce and E business are also usually confused to mean the same thing, even though there are quite a number of differences between the two. The following article provides a clear explanation of what each term means and provides a clear distinction between Ecommerce and E business.?

What is E-business?

E-business refers to the use of technology, the internet, and computers to conduct business online. E-business in other words is all about running a normal business, and the only difference is that an E-business is run over the internet as opposed to the normal physical businesses we see all the time. An E-business will use the internet for a variety of day to day operations including purchasing materials and supplies, sell manufactured products or provide services online. Since most, if not all, components of an E-business is online, the internet acts as a platform for all operations. Clients can meet the technical support personnel online if they have any issues, and can keep in touch with their customers and employees through emails. It is also essential for an E-business to form their own website as the company website will act as the face of their presence on the internet, through which most business activity will occur.?

What is Ecommerce?

Ecommerce is very much centered towards selling goods and services online, and it does not involve so much in the other business operations that are carried out. Online selling is very popular in today?s highly technical marketplace and a number of Ecommerce play in this space. Ebay is a very popular online auction website that allows users to pick any merchandize and place bids, and goods are paid for online and shipped to the buyer. There are also a number of traditional retail stores that have ventured into this online selling business. Companies such as Walmart have their online store in which customers can purchase and pay for goods online. Ecommerce is also very popular among retailers since it is much cheaper as a physical store does not need to be maintained when selling goods online which can also cut on utilities, employment and other costs inherent to a physically established business.?

Ecommerce vs E-business

As you may have already understood from the article, Ecommerce and E-business are very similar to each other. However, e commerce is considered to be a part of E-business practices as selling goods online is a part of E-business activity. The major similarity between the two is that they both require an established presence on the internet. The main difference, however, lies in the way that they do business. An E-business usually encourages a lot of user/customer interaction with the business and with other users, whereas Ecommerce also encourages interaction, but this is more around the products and services that are sold.

Summary:

What is the difference between Ecommerce and E-business?

? Ecommerce and E-business are both ways of conducting business online and, therefore, are quite similar to each other. These terms are also usually confused to mean the same thing, even though there are quite a number of differences between the two.

? E-business refers to the use of technology, the internet and computers to conduct business online. Ecommerce is very much centered towards selling goods and services online, and it does not involve so much in the other business operations that are carried out.

? The major similarity between the two is that they both require an established presence on the internet. The main difference, however, lies in the way that they do business.

Americans see Mitt Romney as candidate for the rich, poll finds

The problem is not that Mitt Romney is rich, according to a new Pew survey. It's that he is seen as being a president who would help the rich more than the middle class.?

By Allison Terry,?Correspondent / August 27, 2012

A poll released Monday suggests that Mitt Romney, and also the Republican Party, continue to struggle with perceptions that their policies benefit the rich more than the middle class.

Seventy-one percent of Americans say that if Mr. Romney were elected president, his policies would be good for the rich.?Heading into the Republican National Convention, Romney will need to overcome the perception that his wealth puts him out of touch with regular Americans, and instead show that he is the candidate who represents the middle class.

?The fact that Romney may be viewed as wealthy doesn't necessarily pose problems for his candidacy," Kim Parker, associate director of the Pew project, told the Associated Press. ?The challenge for Romney lies more in the fact that large majorities say if he is elected president, his policies would likely benefit the wealthy."

More broadly, 63?percent of respondents said the GOP favors the rich, while 23 percent said the party favors the middle class, and the 3 percent said it favors the poor, the poll found. In 2008, 59 percent of Americans said the GOP, and its candidate John McCain, supported policies that favored the rich.

For Democrats, the perceptions are more balanced: 20 percent of respondents said Democrats favor the rich, 35 percent said the middle class, and 32 percent said the poor. Yet the survey suggests that Americans believe that Democrats, too, are increasingly favoring the rich. In 2008, 16 percent said Democrats favor of the rich.

Still, 60 percent say that if President Obama were reelected, his policies would benefit the poor, according to?Pew.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Republicans and Democrats themselves take different views on who is paying enough taxes. Forty-four percent of Republicans say upper-income people pay their fair share in taxes, compared with 13 percent of Democrats. A large majority of Democrats (78 percent) say that upper-income people pay too little in taxes, compared with 33 percent of Republicans.

Both parties agree that middle-income Americans pay their fair share in taxes, including 51 percent of Democrats and 52 percent of Republicans.?

The poll underscores economic data that show a widening gap between economic classes in the US, especially between the rich and poor, Ms. Parker writes.

In another Pew poll released last week, 52 percent of Americans who self-identify as middle class said that Obama?s policies are better for the middle class, compared with 42 percent for Romney.

?As the Republican Party continues to court middle-class voters throughout the fall campaign, it will have to contend with the widespread perception that it is the party of the rich,? writes Parker.

The public survey is based on telephone interviews with 2,508 adults conducted July 16-26.?

'Expendables 2' brawls to No. 1 with $28.8M

(AP) ? Sylvester Stallone and his beefy buddies have muscled their way to the top of the weekend box office.

Stallone's action hero roundup "The Expendables 2" debuted at No. 1 with $28.8 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. That's down from the $34.8 million start for "The Expendables" two years ago.

The Lionsgate sequel elbowed out another action tale as Universal's "The Bourne Legacy" fell to No. 2 in its second weekend with $17 million. That was a steep 55 percent drop from its $38.1 million opening weekend, though the movie's domestic total climbed to a solid $69.6 million.

Three other wide releases opened to modest business.

Focus Features' animated comedy "ParaNorman, about a boy leading the fight against zombies that rise from the grave, was No. 3 with $14 million.

Sony's music remake "Sparkle," featuring "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston, was No. 5 with $12 million. The update of the 1976 movie centers on three sisters who form a singing group in the late 1960s.

Disney's family fantasy "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" was No. 7 with $10.9 million. The movie stars Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as a childless couple who become instant parents to a boy that magically appears in their lives.

The newcomers and holdovers combined to lift Hollywood's overall business. Domestic revenues totaled $139 million, up 12 percent from the same weekend last year, when "The Help" led with $20 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Business had been down the previous three weekends this summer, which has fallen short of the record-setting business many studio executives were predicting at the start of the season.

Since the first weekend of May, revenues total $3.9 billion, down 5 percent from last summer's, when Hollywood finished with an all-time high of $4.4 billion for the season, according to Hollywood.com.

This summer delivered huge hits such as "The Avengers" with $617.6 million domestically and "The Dark Knight Rises," which took in $11.1 million this weekend to cross the $400 million mark and edge past "The Hunger Games" to become the year's second-biggest hit.

But other releases such as "Dark Shadows," ''Battleship," ''The Watch" and "Total Recall" were duds that failed to live up to the summer's hype.

With only two weekends left in the season and no obvious hits premiering, it's unlikely that Hollywood will break last summer's record.

"We're winding down the summer and we're in the dog days of August. They're called that for a reason, because we're experiencing the typical summer slowdown, only it seems worse this year," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

"The Expendables 2" also pulled in $17.3 million overseas.

Along with Stallone, "The Expendables 2" cast includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

While the sequel drew smaller crowds than the first movie, distributor Lionsgate noted that business held up better for the new one in its second day. Revenues dipped only 3 percent from Friday to Saturday compared to 11 percent for "The Expendables," according to Lionsgate.

That's a sign that more first-night fans may be talking up the sequel, which also earned better reviews than the original.

"We believe with solid word of mouth and even critical response to the film, that bodes well for the playability," said David Spitz, Lionsgate's head of distribution. "It's the old, it's not a sprint, it's a marathon."

"Sparkle" was the first movie since 1996's "The Preacher's Wife," for Houston, who died in February. The movie was produced on a small $14 million budget, so it will not be a financial burden to Sony despite its modest earnings.

A star's death often boosts audience interest, as happened with Heath Ledger and the Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight" or Michael Jackson and the hit music documentary "Michael Jackson: This Is It."

That did not hold true for "Sparkle," in which Houston had a supporting role as the stern but loving mother of the three singers.

"I don't think that was ever in the cards where there was this sudden interest in seeing the movie," Dergarabedian said. "There didn't seem to be that kind of, 'oh, it's Whitney Houston's last movie, we've got to go see it' attitude."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Expendables 2," $28.8 million ($17.3 million international).

2. "The Bourne Legacy," $17 million ($18.2 million international).

3. "ParaNorman," $14 million ($2 million international).

HBT: MLB to test 'advanced replay' next week

For all Bud Selig?s talk regarding how supposedly no one complains about the lack of expanded instant replay it sure sounds like MLB is planning to ? well, expand instant replay.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that MLB will ?test two different advanced replay systems live during games starting next week, and if they prove accurate they could precede an overhaul of the system for the 2013 season.?

Yankee Stadium and Citi Field will be the ballparks used for what Passan says are ?a radar-based system and a camera-based system, both similar to the one used in tennis for down-the-line fair-or-foul calls.?

And despite Selig?s stubborn, constant insistence to the contrary, Passan writes that among owners ?there is a groundswell of support to at least quell the perception that baseball is ignoring the available technologies.?

Or, you know, what a huge percentage of the sport?s fan base has been saying for years now (while Selig apparently wasn?t listening).

Emergency communications get a boost | 9-1-1.com

9-1-1 in the News, Community | April | August 17, 2012 at 9:18 am

STRATFORD, CT ? When it comes to emergency response, clear and concise communication is critical. Misunderstandings can have drastic consequences.

?It is really frustrating when a call comes in and you have to ask dispatch to keep repeating themselves,? said Brian Lampart Deputy Chief and Fire Marshal for the Town of Stratford.

To help resolve the issue of fuzzy communication and radio dead spots around Stratford, a 130 foot monopole is being erected at the Fire Department Headquarters across from Town Hall. The pole will host an antenna array that should help resolve issues for all of Stratford?s emergency response services.

?Right now we work with a series of repeaters in the Fire Department,? said Lampart. ?There are a few dead spots such as parts of Huntington Road and notably the office building at 99 Holly Lane. This new tower should help address those areas.?

The police department will also benefit from the new tower. The existing police communications system uses an antenna in Oronoque that receives signals via phone lines. While they have a backup system in the event of a storm related outage, it isn?t as powerful or clear as the Oronoque tower.

Eric Fine, project manager for Northeastern Communications, Inc., is in charge of installing the new antenna and transitioning the transmitting equipment to it. He said they are working in two phases.

Phase one will involve getting the fire department system hooked into the new antenna. He hopes to have that completed by the middle of next week. The second phase will involve connecting the police to the antenna.

Complicating coverage matters for the town is a Federal decree for all radio systems transition to narrowbanding. This means reducing their broadcast bandwidth from 25 kHz per channel down to no more than 12.5 kHz. Intended as a measure to increase efficiency and open up more channels in the same spectrum, the measure has created issues with signal strength and new equipment requirements.

According to the FCC, it is possible some systems would see a 3 dB loss in signal strength.

The deadline for the transition is Jan. 1, 2013 though Lampart said Stratford is already in compliance.

The cost of the antenna was covered under a Federal grant. Lampart didn?t have the exact figure available but said it was in the ballpark of $200,000. The town did have to fund the actual installation. The Fire Department secured all of the necessary permits through the Zoning Commission.

Lampart noted that any rumors concerning the possibility of contracting use of the tower to cell phone companies are false. He said the tower across the street at Town Hall already services cell providers and even if the department was interested in renting usage, it wouldn?t be practical to move the equipment across the street.

?Besides, those things are a major eye sore,? said Lampart.

The new antenna is expected to be fully operational for all emergency response departments within a month.

NFL Preseason Preview - Indianapolis (1-0) at Pittsburgh (0-1) (ET)

After making an outstanding opening impression, Andrew Luck gets to showcase his considerable talents on a national stage when the new Indianapolis Colts quarterback leads his team into Heinz Field for an intriguing Sunday night preseason showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Any bitterness Colts fans were still harboring over the organization's unpopular decision to release the at-risk Peyton Manning in March probably subsided after witnessing Luck's pro debut. The No. 1 overall pick in this past draft lived up to his advance billing and more, orchestrating three touchdown drives on his first four possessions in contributing to last weekend's 38-3 shellacking of the St. Louis Rams at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Luck made an impact right off the bat, finding Donald Brown for a short pass that the running back turned into a 63-yard touchdown on the Colts' initial play from scrimmage. The former Stanford star connected with Austin Collie for a 23-yard score later on and finished his first game with 188 yards on a crisp 10-of-16 passing.

"To see him perform and do the things he did under pressure...he handled it well," Colts first-year head coach Chuck Pagano said of Luck.

A new-look Indianapolis defense that's transitioning to a 3-4 scheme also shined in Pagano's initiation, limiting the punchless Rams to 215 total yards while not yielding a touchdown. Jerry Hughes, a 2010 first-round pick who's shifting to outside linebacker, led the effort with a pair of sacks.

The Colts did have a few down moments, however. Starting inside linebacker Pat Angerer fractured his foot in the contest and will miss the beginning of the regular season as a result, while right guard Mike McGlynn sustained a high ankle sprain and running backs Delone Carter and Mewelde Moore exited with rib injuries.

Moore spent the last four seasons with Pittsburgh before joining the Colts as a free agent. He and Carter are competing with rookie Vick Ballard to be the primary backup to Brown.

Angerer's injury creates a battle between ex-Eagles Moise Fokou and Greg Lloyd, former CFL player Jerrell Freeman and Mario Harvey for the starting nod opposite Kavell Conner.

The Steelers enter their 2012 home preseason opener somewhat banged up as well. Perennial Pro Bowl linebacker James Harrison will be sidelined at least the next three weeks after undergoing a scope on his left knee on Wednesday, longtime nose tackle Casey Hampton remains on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from offseason knee surgery and starting fullback David Johnson was recently placed on injured reserve after tearing his ACL in last week's 24-23 loss at Philadelphia.

And Pittsburgh remains without Mike Wallace as the fleet-footed wide receiver continues a camp holdout over dissatisfaction with his contract.

The Steelers have some health issues at running back as well, with 2011 leading rusher Rashard Mendenhall still on the mend from a torn ACL and projected replacement Isaac Redman doubtful for Sunday's contest with a strained groin. Jonathan Dwyer, who ripped off 40 yards on only two carries against the Eagles, is dealing with a minor shoulder sprain but is expected to play.

Pittsburgh will also be undergoing some shuffling along the offensive line for this game, with normal right tackle Marcus Gilbert moving to the left side and Ramon Foster sliding into Gilbert's usual spot. Veteran left tackle Max Starks (knee) isn't yet ready to play after just being activated off the PUP list, while rookie second-round pick Mike Adams struggled in his place during the opener.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was sharp in a brief appearance in the Philadelphia game, however, completing 7-of-8 attempts for 49 yards in helping the Steelers jump out to a 13-0 halftime lead.

The Colts and Steelers will be squaring off in preseason play for the first time since 2000, but the teams did face another in Indianapolis during Week 3 of last year's regular season, a 23-20 Pittsburgh win. The Colts own an 11-9 edge in the preseason series and have taken the last two meetings, including a 24-23 decision in Mexico City back in 2000.

Wen says China still can meet growth target

BEIJING (AP) ? China's premier says the country should meet this year's economic targets but is warning hardship could continue for some time and trade conditions will be grim.

During a visit Wednesday to eastern China, Premier Wen Jiabao cited a small improvement in industrial output and said employment is stable, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The report gave no direct indication whether Beijing might be considering more interest rate cuts or other stimulus measures to boost growth that slumped to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the quarter ending in June. That is relatively robust compared with the United States, Europe and Japan but has hurt Chinese companies that depend on higher growth to drive sales.

"We have the conditions and capabilities, and will be sure to fulfill this year's economic and social development targets," Wen was quoted as saying.

However, he also "warned that the foundation for economic stabilization is still unstable, and that economic hardships may continue for some time."

The government has cut rates twice since the start of June and is pumping money into the economy through higher investment by state companies. Authorities are resisting calls for more aggressive action after their huge stimulus in response to the 2008 global crisis fueled inflation and a wasteful building boom.

The ruling Communist Party's growth target for the year is 7.5 percent. Private sector analysts expect full-year growth of about 8 percent.

The slowdown raises the risk of job losses and unrest at a time when the ruling party is trying to enforce calm ahead of a handover of power this year to younger leaders.

Analysts initially expected China's relatively robust economy to recover starting early this year but have pushed back that time frame following a drumbeat of bad news from Europe and the United States.

Export growth in July collapsed to 1 percent, well below already anemic forecasts of about 5 percent, and factory output and consumer spending weakened despite the stimulus efforts.

The slump is due in part to government efforts in 2010-11 to cool overheating and inflation with lending and investment curbs. Chinese leaders reversed course last year and eased some controls after global demand plunged but have kept in place controls on home purchases and investment to prevent overbuilding and a surge in housing costs.

Wen called on local authorities to "carry out work in line with new conditions and local realities," Xinhua said, without giving details.

The premier pointed to improvements in some areas where the plunge in sales has driven thousands of small exporters out of business.

Wen said industrial production in Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces in the southeast and Jiangsu, north of Shanghai, rose by 1.4, 1.9 and 0.7 percentage points in July compared with output in the first half.

The premier said the national economy created 8.12 million new urban jobs in the first seven months of the year, an increase of 390,000 from the same period of last year.

Wen warned company managers they "should be prepared for a relatively long period of grim foreign trade," according to Xinhua.

The government set a target of a 10 percent trade growth this year. Trade grew 9.2 percent in the first half of the year but the full-year target looks increasingly difficult to meet.

(AP) ? Syrian government airstrikes on a residential neighborhood in a rebel-held town killed over 40 people and wounded at least 100 others including many women and children, international watchdog Human Rights Watch said Thursday.

The strikes on the town of Azaz in northern Syria a day earlier leveled the better part of a poor neighborhood and sent panicked civilians fleeing for cover. So many were wounded that the local hospital locked its doors, directing residents to drive their injured to the nearby Turkish border for treatment on the other side.

The bombardment appeared aimed at rattling the sense of control that rebels have sought to project over the northwestern corner of Syria near the Turkish border since they drove President Bashar Assad's army from the area last month.

Reporters from The Associated Press saw nine bodies in the bombings' immediate aftermath, including a baby.

Human Rights Watch, which investigated the site of the bombing two hours after the attack, put the number at over 40.

"This horrific attack killed and wounded scores of civilians and destroyed a whole residential block," said Anna Neistat, the group's acting emergencies director. "Yet again, Syrian government forces attacked with callous disregard for civilian life."

HRW said two opposition Free Syrian Army facilities in the vicinity might have been targets of the Syrian aircraft.

One was the headquarters of the local Free Syrian Army brigade two streets away from the block that was hit. The other was a detention facility where the Free Syrian Army held "security detainees" ? government military personnel and members of pro-government shabiha militia. Neither of these facilities was damaged in the attack.

Azaz, which is home to around 35,000 people, is also the town where rebels have been holding 11 Lebanese Shiites they captured in May. On Wednesday, Lebanese media reported conflicting reports on their fate, but it was unclear whether they had been affected by the bombing.

In Damascus, the U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said the Syrian conflict has "become more intense and is too often indiscriminate."

"All parties must do more to protect civilians," said Amos at the end of the three-day mission to try to open more channels for international aid inside Syria.

She observed that "the humanitarian situation has worsened" since her last visit to Syria in March, when the U.N. estimated more than 1 million people had been displaced or in need of critical humanitarian aid. "Now as many as 2.5 million are in need of assistance," she said.

Later in Beirut, Amos expressed frustration at Syria's reluctance to allow more major international aid groups into the country because of Syrian fears that relief supplies could reach rebels.

"They don't want to see that happen," she said.

France's foreign minister said that while humanitarian aid was needed, "we also need political action to achieve replacing Bashar Assad, and we need action on the ground carried out by the rebel army."

Assad is "butchering his own people and the sooner he goes the better," Laurent Fabius said during a visit to Jordan, where France has set up a military field hospital to treat Syrian refugees.

In recent months, rebels have pushed the Syrian army from a number of towns in a swath of territory south of the Turkish border and north of Aleppo, Syria's largest city. About a dozen destroyed tanks and army vehicles are scattered around Azaz, left over from those battles.

As the Assad regime's grip on the ground slips, however, it is increasingly targeting rebel areas with attack helicopters and fighter jets ? weapons the rebels can't challenge.

Also on Thursday, state-run television said government troops freed three journalists who were seized last week by rebels while covering violence in a Damascus suburb.

Syria TV says the three journalists from the pro-regime TV station Al-Ikhbariya were freed in a "qualitative operation" Thursday in the town of al-Tal just north of the capital. It did not provide further details.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said the Al-Ikhbariya team was freed, amid heavy shelling on al-Tal. The group relies on a network of activists on the ground.

In another symbolic blow to Syria, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation suspended Syria from the group during a meeting in Saudi Arabia. The move brought a swift denunciation from Iran, Assad's main regional ally.

Iran's foreign minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, criticized the decision as "unfair" because Syria was not invited to the Mecca summit, which wrapped up early Thursday. Saudi Arabia is among the chief backers of the Syrian rebels.

industrial roller shuttersRoller shutters are ideal for the security conscious who want proven security in place for their home or business. First and foremost, roller shutters are an excellent deterrent to criminals due to their robust and complete construction. Unlike some other forms of permanent security, they can be rolled up to let in light and air during the day, and quickly rolled down at night to provide security. Their metal construction makes ?it extremely difficult for anyone to gain access to your property without heavy duty cutting equipment.

Take a look below for additional benefits of roller shutters:

Temperature Regulation

Insulated roller shutters are ideal for keeping the cold out and the warm in, or vice versa during Summer. Their solid construction lets little heat and cold in or out. A high quality shutter can prevent almost 90 percent of a building?s heat escaping and as much as 70 percent of cold from moving in. It is for this reason that many people choose roller shutters to help regulate a comfortable living or working environment, working with your exisiting climate control measures and reducing the need for expensive air conditioning, therefore reducing your energy bills.

Sound Proofing

The same properties that make roller shutters excellent temperature regulators also helps to keep out the distracting noises of the outside. Consistently high levels of background noise are known to lower productivity and increase stress, so for your or your employees benefit an investment in an insulated roller shutter may be a good choice. Insulated shutter doors can reduce external noise by as much as 50 percent. And for domestic installations, roller shutters are perfect for preventing loud noises from bothering neighbours. So for those who like their music at home loud, or regularly play loud intruments, a roller shutter may be the ideal solution to your noise problem.

Blocking Light

For most people, the light kept out by curtains or blinds is plenty enough, but for those situations where a total?blackout?is required, roller shutters do the job perfectly. Roller shutters cover the entire window area, leaving no gaps at the top or sides. Whatever your reasons for needing total blackout, whether you?re a shift worker, have problems from glare from the sun or just want the added privacy, a roller shutter might be the perfect solution for you.

Roller shutters have other applications aside from those listed here, however these tend to be the most typically overlooked. Desert Dryness Inspired Mummy Diversity

Some Chinchorro mummies are covered in black paint and wear simple face masks and wigs of human hair; others are painted red, with more lifelike faces and bodies filled with earth, feathers and clay. Still others are wrapped in coiled vegetable fiber, and others covered in mud, but otherwise left alone.

Nature inspired all of these, according to researchers, who point to the bone-dry land upon which the Chinchorro lived. South America's?Atacama Desert is one of the driest in the world, and bodies don't naturally decompose there.

But it wasn't just the desert; climate helped create these elaborate mummies in other ways. Periods of greater rainfall on the margins of the desert and in the nearby highlands of the Andes Mountains, and a more productive ocean nearby, prompted a growth in population that peaked about 6,000 years ago, they write in a study published online Monday (Aug. 13) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

When the dead stick around

A growing population meant the dead multiplied as well.?

"They became a strong presence for the living population, and they would have a strong impact on the living," lead researcher Pablo Marquet, of the Catholic University of Chile and the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico, told LiveScience.

He and colleagues write that at about the time the first man-made mummies appeared ? the black-painted ones, dating between 7,000 and 8,000 years ago ? a typical Chinchorro individual could potentially be exposed to a "population" of several thousand natural human mummies.

"The lack of decomposition may have had a profound influence upon the living population, because the dead would have still been among them, albeit in a different state of existence," they write.

The Chinchorro, who were hunter-gatherers, buried their dead in shallow graves near domestic areas and water sources. [10 Weird Ways We Deal With the Dead]

Why climate mattered

Marquet and his colleagues compared the estimated size of the human population over time with records that provided evidence of climate around the time in which the Chinchorro were making mummies.

With data dating back about 14,000 years, they looked at piles of debris left by rodents, geological records of freshwater bodies, as well as chemical measurements from ice cores taken from the summit of the Bolivian volcano Sajama. They estimated the human population using radiocarbon dates taken from remains.

The results indicated artificial mummification emerged when resources, particularly fresh water, were more plentiful, and the human population was rapidly increasing. A larger population fosters the creation of new tools and new ideas, and in this case, probably led to the development of elaborate funerary practices, they write.? [Photos: Incan Child Mummies]

Meet the mummies

The Chinchorro made the black mummies, the first artificial mummies, from corpses by removing the organs, cleaning the skeletons and reinforcing the bones with sticks. They then reshaped the body and dressed it with the person's own skin or with the skin from an animal. The head was covered with a simple face mask and a wig of human hair, and then the entire body was painted with manganese oxide, which made it appear black, according to a description on study researcher Bernardo Arriaza's website.

Other types came later. These included red mummies. The Chinchorro made incisions in the abdomen, shoulder, groin and ankles to remove organs and muscle tissue. The bones were also reinforced and the body cavities dried and filled with earth, feathers and clay. The head received a long wig and a mask with delineated features. The rest of the body was painted red, Arriaza's website, Momias Chinchorro, states.

Others were prepared in a similar fashion but wrapped in coils of vegetable fiber. Still other corpses were left unaltered except for being covered by a layer of mud.

Around 4,000 years ago, the region became much drier and coastal waters became less productive, at about this time the Chinchorro stopped making artificial mummies, the researchers write. They probably moved inland to the highlands of the Andes, according to Marquet. ?

HBT: Sabathia could miss next start for Yankees

Here?s a potentially troubling development for the first-place Yankees.

According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, CC Sabathia could miss his next start after experiencing some minor soreness in his left elbow in recent days.

Sabathia threw his regular bullpen session on Friday, but he could be scratched from Monday?s scheduled start against the Rangers if symptoms persist.

?Right now, it?s a low-level concern,? the source said. ?Long-term, it?s not a big concern.?

Sabathia gave up five runs (three earned) over 6 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Tigers and holds a 3.56 ERA through 20 starts this season. No pitcher has thrown more innings than Sabathia since the start of the 2003 season. Only Mark Buehrle has logged more innings since Sabathia made his major league debut in 2001. The Yankees are downplaying the situation right now, but you can bet they are hoping the miles on his arm aren?t catching up with him.

The Technological Advancements in Laptops Over the Years

In the past ten to fifteen years, laptops have made significant advancements in terms of their technology, convenience, and flexibility. Now, laptops are cheaper, smaller, and faster. They can do everything a desktop computer can do and they have the advantage of being portable. Laptop computers are now used by almost everybody due to their incredible technological advancements.

Unique Technological Features: Laptops are now equipped with a wide variety of technologies such as built-in keyboards and mouse, longer life batteries, and web cams. There are also laptops that have a flip top that opens and shuts. This feature protects the keyboard and other laptop components.

Advancements that Emphasize Convenience and Flexibility: Because laptops are portable and designed for wireless technology, users can take them anywhere with them and use them at any location where internet access is available such as: beside a hotel pool, at the airport, in a restaurant, in a hotel room, and more. Users can even perform business tasks in such places as the car, train, sitting on a beach, in a school cafeteria, and much more. You can buy laptops that are lightweight, thin, and there are different laptops with different size screens. This allows laptops to be carried easily in a carrying bag.

Same Standard Features as a Desktop Computer: Practically all the standard features of a desktop are available in laptops. Laptops now have fully operating removable devices such as DVD / CD ROM drives and burners. They also have hubs for small devices such as card readers, flash drives, and mobile telephone devices. In addition, laptops have ports available for a network hub, modem, satellite connection, and WiFi connection. These features are extremely useful for personal computing, business professionals, inter-networking, and gamers.

In the future, researchers are looking into further advancing the laptop. For instance, there is research being done into creating a flexible screen that rolls up, a keyboard that retracts and goes into the machine when not in use, creating a higher degree of personalization, creating a longer battery life, shaving grams off the processor and connectors to trim weight while maintaining its firmness, expanding the control of a laptop using speech, touch, or other means, 3-D without glasses, and making it easier to see the screen when sitting in the sun. Experts are also predicting that there will be a growing need for multi-touch screen laptops within education. In addition, developers are experimenting with other power sources such as harnessing the power of the sun to power a laptop.

Over the past 10 to 15 years, we have seen enormous growth in the world of technology. Advancements in technology have now changed the way businesses compete in today?s market. The laptop is one of those important technological advancements. Laptops offer incredible benefits for business, education, or personal use. Of all the computing technological advancements, laptops are surely one of the best and make for an important business or personal investment. Take a moment to explore the benefits of a buying a laptop. It will definitely make life much easier.

New Kenyan fossils shed light on early human evolution

Friday, August 10, 2012

Exciting new fossils discovered east of Lake Turkana confirm that there were two additional species of our genus ? Homo ? living alongside our direct human ancestral species, Homo erectus, almost two million years ago. The finds, announced in the prestigious scientific journal Nature on August 9th, include a face, a remarkably complete lower jaw, and part of a second lower jaw. They were uncovered between 2007 and 2009 by the Koobi Fora Research Project (KFRP), led by Meave and Louise Leakey. KFRP's fieldwork was facilitated by the Turkana Basin Institute (TBI), and supported by the National Geographic Society, which has funded the KFRP since 1968.

Four decades ago, the KFRP discovered the enigmatic fossil known as KNM-ER 1470 (or "1470" for short). This skull, readily distinguished by its large brain size and long flat face, ignited a longstanding debate about just how many different species of early Homo lived alongside Homo erectus during the Pleistocene epoch. 1470's unusual morphology was attributed by some scientists to sexual differences and natural degrees of variation within a single species, whereas others interpreted the fossil as evidence of a separate species.

This decades-old dilemma has endured for two reasons. First, comparisons with other fossils have been limited due to the fact that 1470's remains do not include its teeth or lower jaw. Second, no other fossil skull has mirrored 1470's flat and long face, leaving in doubt just how representative these characteristics are. The new fossils address both issues.

"For the past 40 years we have looked long and hard in the vast expanse of sediments around Lake Turkana for fossils that confirm the unique features of 1470's face and show us what its teeth and lower jaw would have looked like," says Meave Leakey, co-leader of the KFRP and a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. "At last we have some answers."

"Combined, the three new fossils give a much clearer picture of what 1470 looked like," says Fred Spoor, leader of the scientific analyses. "As a result, it is now clear that two species of early Homo lived alongside Homo erectus. The new fossils will greatly help in unraveling how our branch of human evolution first emerged and flourished almost two million years ago."

Found within a radius of just over 10 km from 1470's location, the three new fossils are dated between 1.78 million and 1.95 million years old. The face KNM-ER 62000, discovered by field crew member Elgite Lokorimudang in 2008, is very similar to that of 1470, showing that the latter is not a single "odd one out" individual. Moreover, the face's well-preserved upper jaw has almost all of its cheek teeth still in place, which for the first time makes it possible to infer the type of lower jaw that would have fitted 1470. A particularly good match can be found in the other two new fossils, the lower jaw KNM-ER 60000, found by Cyprian Nyete in 2009, and part of another lower jaw, KNM-ER 62003, found by Robert Moru in 2007. KNM-ER 60000 stands out as the most complete lower jaw of an early member of the genus Homo yet discovered.

The team working on the new finds included Christopher Kiarie (TBI), who carried out the laboratory preparation of the fossils, Craig Feibel (Rutgers University), who studied the age of the fossils, and Susan Ant?n (New York University), Christopher Dean (UCL, University College London), Meave and Louise Leakey (TBI, Kenya; and Stony Brook University, New York) and Fred Spoor (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig and UCL), who analysed the fossils. The National Geographic Society funded the fieldwork, the Leakey Foundation funded geological studies, and the Max Planck Society supported laboratory work.

Manchester United slashes price for US IPO

Manchester United slashed the price of its US share launch, cutting the amount it was raising in Friday's IPO to $233 million from a hoped-for $300 million or more.

The fabled team, mired in debt since 2005 after a heavily leveraged takeover by the Glazer family of Miami-based investors, lowered its price for the 16.7 million shares on offer to $14 late Thursday from the originally planned $16-20 range.

The company gave no reason for cutting the price, but the IPO has come amid some doubts about the team's ability to boost profits as long as it carries a hefty debt burden -- Morningstar analysts estimated a fair price for the shares at just $10.

Investors have also become wary about aggressively priced initial public offerings after the much-promoted Facebook launch soured, with the social networking giant's shares sinking to nearly half of the launch price just two months after the May 18 issue.

Critics had assailed the Glazers' plan to allocate just half the IPO receipts to reducing the team's current 423-million-pound debt burden.

The other half will go to the Glazers themselves, who are contributing 8.33 million shares to the IPO.

In addition, despite putting 10 percent of the shares of Manchester United Ltd. on sale, the Glazers will retain about 97 percent voting control of the listed company via their lock on "B" shares, which have ten times the voting power of the "A" shares being sold to the public.

That arrangement reportedly caused regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore to balk at a listing in their markets, where the club had hoped to tap the interest of tens of millions of Asian Man U fans.

The price still left the legendary football franchise valued at $2.3 billion, well above any of its rivals, including Real Madrid, which sports much larger profits.

Home to stars like Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, United is the most successful club in English football history with a massive global fan base, especially in Asia.

But it has struggled with the debt loaded onto the team's books since the tycoon Malcolm Glazer and his family of investors in sports teams and real estate took over in 2005.

The debts, critics say, have steadily eroded its ability to compete for top talent in an ever-spiraling player transfer market.

But debt has been pared in the past two years to the current level, and profits rebounded with the team's narrow loss of the Premier League title to cross-town rivals Manchester City this year.

According to the prospectus, profits for the nine months to March 31 were 38 million pounds, nearly triple a year earlier.

But that adds up to just 24 pence per share for the nine months, giving the company a rich price-to-earnings ratio usually reserved for high-growth technology firms.

The shares were due to hit the market sometime during Friday's session, trading under the MANU symbol.

The owners hope the value in the club's global popularity will translate into strong investor support.

"For 134 years now we've been one of the most successful and iconic sports teams in the world," executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said in an IPO presentation.

"We generate inherently compelling content; we've developed into the global brand in sports. And as a result of that we have a whole line of partners knocking on our door and trying to partner up with us."

But supporters have strongly criticized the share sale.

"The IPO is a huge wasted opportunity to stop this enormous outflow of money from Manchester United," said Andy Green, author of the Andersred blog, which focuses on management of the team.

The Manchester United Supporters' Trust, which advocates for fan ownership of the team, called the share sale a "bad deal for fans, investors and the club."

"For the club, this is a bad deal because more than half of the funds raised will now be paid direct to the Glazer family."

"For fans, it is a bad deal because it is a missed opportunity for more equitable ownership of our club, with proper distribution of voting rights," the group added.

"By floating shares at this inflated price, it provides a poisoned pill which might deter any more enlightened owners from buying the club in future."
