Romney tells SC voters he's 'pro-life' candidate (AP)

GREER, S.C. ? Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on Thursday insisted he is "pro-life" and said he's raising the issue on the campaign trail to counter his rivals' attacks.

"I understand that there are some attack ads coming my way that question" his commitment to life, Romney told reporters gathered at a motorcycle dealership in Greer, S.C. "Obviously it's important for me to remind people that I'm pro-life."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's campaign is running ads in South Carolina attacking Romney for changing his position on abortion. It's part of an onslaught of negative ads Romney is facing in the first-in-the-South primary, some from his rivals and some from their wealthy SuperPAC allies.

Romney arrived in South Carolina Wednesday and held a rally in Columbia, where he added extra emphasis to his typical campaign speech focused on protecting life.

"I'm convinced that the principles of opportunity, and freedom and the protection of life were not temporary but are permanent," Romney said Wednesday. And on Thursday, campaigning in the conservative Upstate, he repeated "life, life" twice as he recited the Declaration of Independence.

Gingrich has been hammering away at Romney's claim to conservative credentials, calling Romney a "Massachusetts moderate." Gingrich said Thursday he intends to emphasize Romney's views on social issues such as abortion, gun control and gay marriage in the days leading up to South Carolina's Jan. 21 primary.

Romney also is defending his record as a venture capitalist, repeating his contention that the company he ran was set up to save businesses where possible, although he's admitted that in private business, these efforts aren't always fruitful.

Romney came to South Carolina Wednesday as the unmistakable front-runner in the GOP presidential sweepstakes. But many of the state's voters are conservative Christians and tea party supporters, and Romney struggled here four years ago. He came in fourth.

Romney said Thursday the environment has changed enough that he could win here.

"Four years ago, we were really focused on Iraq and what was happening there and the surge. And that was an area that really was in John McCain's wheelhouse," Romney said. "Now the economy is the issue people are most concerned about. That's in my wheelhouse."

"This is a time when people care about the economy and the scale of government. It's the message of the tea party, it's the message of the Republican Party," he said.

Romney was leaving South Carolina Thursday to hold a midday rally in West Palm Beach, Fla., where absentee voters are already mailing in ballots. The primary is Jan. 31.

But first he stopped to admire the motorcycles on display at Cherokee Trikes and More after he wrapped up the rally in the back warehouse. He stood with an array of motorcycles behind him as he took reporters' questions ? but refused to sit on a motorcycle and pose for pictures.

Instead, he joked: "And, what, put a helmet on, Dukakis style?"

Can scientists define 'life' ... in three words?

In November 2011, NASA launched its biggest, most ambitious mission to Mars. The $2.5 billion Mars Science Lab spacecraft will arrive in orbit around the Red Planet this August, releasing a lander that will use rockets to control a slow descent into the atmosphere. Equipped with a "sky crane," the lander will gently lower the one-ton Curosity rover on the surface of Mars. Curiosity, which weighs five times more than any previous Martian rover, will perform an unprecedented battery of tests for three months as it scoops up soil from the floor of the 96-mile-wide Gale Crater. Its mission, NASA says, will be to "assess whether Mars ever was, or is still today, an environment able to support microbial life."

For all the spectacular engineering that?s gone into Curiosity, however, its goal is actually quite modest. When NASA says it wants to find out if Mars was ever suitable for life, they use a very circumscribed version of the word. They are looking for signs of liquid water, which all living things on Earth need. They are looking for organic carbon, which life on Earth produces and, in some cases, can feed on to survive. In other words, they?re looking on Mars for the sorts of conditions that support life on Earth.

But there?s no good reason to assume that all life has to be like the life we?re familiar with. In 2007, a board of scientists appointed by the National Academies of Science decided they couldn?t rule out the possibility that life might be able to exist without water or carbon. If such weird life on Mars exists, Curiosity will probably miss it.

Philosophical challenge
Defining life poses a challenge that?s downright philosophical. There?s no ambiguity in looking for water, because we have a clear definition of it. That definition is the same whether you?re on Earth, on Mars, or in intergalactic space. It is the same whether you?re dealing with water as ice, liquid, or vapor. But there is no definition of life that?s universally agreed upon. When Portland State University biologist Radu Popa was working on a book about defining life, he decided to count up all the definitions that scientists have published in books and scientific journals. Some scientists define life as something capable of metabolism. Others make the capacity to evolve the key distinction. Popa gave up counting after about 300 definitions.

Things haven?t gotten much better in the years since Popa published "Between Necessity and Probability: Searching for the Definition and Origin of Life" in 2004. Scientists have unveiled even more definitions, yet none of them have been widely embraced. But now Edward Trifonov, a biologist at the University of Haifa in Israel, has come forward with a new attempt at defining life, based on a new strategy. Rather than add on yet another definition to the pile, he?s investigating the language that previous scientists have used when they talk about life.

Trifonov acknowledges that each definition of life is different, but there?s an underlying similarity to all of them. ?Common sense suggests that, probably, one could arrive to a consensus, if only the authors, some two centuries apart from one another, could be brought together,? he writes in a recent issue of the Journal of Biomolecular Structures and Dynamics (article PDF).

In lieu of resurrecting dead scientists, Trifanov analyzed the linguistic structure of 150 definitions of life, grouping similar words into categories. He found that he could sum up what they all have in common in three words. Life, Trifonov declares, is simply self-reproduction with variations.

Trifonov argues that this minimal definition is useful because it encompasses both life as we know it and life as we may discover it to be. And as scientists tinker with self-replicating molecules, they may be able to put his definition to the test. It may be possible for them to create a system of molecules that meets the requirements. If it fails to come "alive," it will show that the definition was missing something crucial about life.

Trifonov's editors at the journal invited a number of other scientists who study the origin of life to issue their verdict on Trifonov's definition. Judging from their responses, it doesn?t look like anyone?s ready to link arms and sing "Kumbaya" over their beakers of primordial soup. Popa, for example, questions whether the best way out of the definitional bind is to look for consenus. ?It does apply very well to fields where basic research has more or less ended, yet it makes it difficult for pioneers and novel theories to gain recognition, irrespective of how right they are,? he writes (article PDF). If science is nothing but a popularity contest, ideas like plate tectonics might have never been discovered and confirmed.

What's missing?
A number of the scientists who responded to Trifonov felt that his definition was missing one key feature or another, such as metabolism, a cell, or information. Eugene Koonin, a biologist at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, thinks that Trifonov?s definition is missing error correction. He argues that ?self-reproduction with variation? is redundant, since the laws of thermodynamics ensure that error-free replication is impossible. ?The problem is the exact opposite,? Koonin observes: if life replicates with too many errors, it stops replicating. He offers up an alternative: life requires ?replications with an error rate below the sustainability threshold.?

Jack Szostak, a Nobel-prize winning Harvard biologist, simply rejects the search for any definition of life. "Attempts to define life are irrelevant to scientific efforts to understand the origin of life," he writes (article PDF).

Szostak himself has spent two decades tinkering with biological molecules to create simple artificial life. Instead of using DNA to store genetic information and proteins to carry out chemical reactions, Szostak hopes to create cells that only contain single-stranded RNA molecules. Like many researchers, Szostak suspects that RNA-based life preceded DNA-based life. It may have even been the first kind of life on Earth, even if it cannot be found on the planet today.

Life, Szostak suspects, arose through a long series of steps, as small molecules began interacting with each other, replicating, getting enveloped into cells, and so on. Once there were full-blown cells that could grow, divide, and evolve, no one would deny that life had come to exist on Earth. But it?s pointless to try to find the precise point along the path where life suddenly sprang into being and met an arbitrary definition. "None of this matters, however, in terms of the fundamental scientific questions concerning the transitions leading from chemistry to biology," says Szostak.

It?s conceivable that Mars has Earthlike life, either because one planet infected the other, or because chemistry became biology along the same path on both of them. In either case, Curiosity may be able to do some good science when it arrives at Mars this summer. But if it?s something fundamentally different, even the most sophisticated machines may not be able to help us until we come to a decision about what we?re looking for in the first place.

US to create China trade watch task force

President Barack Obama intends to create a task force to monitor and tackle possible trade and other commercial violations by China, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The Enforcement Task Force, despite its generic name, is specifically meant to target Beijing, the newspaper said, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The force will include officials from the Treasury, Commerce and Energy departments, as well as the US Trade Representative's office, according to the report which came as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner arrived in Beijing.

The White House had no immediate comment on the report.

Obama will formally announce the launch of the task force during or close to his State of the Union address later this month, the Journal said.

Geithner, whose visit to Beijing is expected to focus on sanctions against Iran, is expected to meet top Chinese leaders including Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday, according to the Treasury.

The United States has long argued that China's yuan is significantly undervalued, although it refrains from saying that Beijing manipulates the currency, which could lead to retaliatory action by Congress.

Washington officials argue that Beijing's decision to keep the yuan artificially low fuels a flow of cheap exports that helped send the US trade deficit with China to more than $US270 billion ($A264.20 billion) in 2010.

But China defends its exchange rate regime, saying it is moving gradually to make the yuan more flexible.

Boston lawsuit claims DES-breast cancer link

BOSTON (AP) -- Arline MacCormack first heard about DES from her mother when she was 17. Three decades later, MacCormack believes that the drug her mother took to prevent miscarriages caused her to develop breast cancer at age 44.

MacCormack, of Newton, is one of 53 women from around the country who are suing drug companies who made and promoted DES for millions of pregnant women from about 1938 to the early 1970s. In 1971, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration told doctors to stop prescribing DES for their pregnant patients after a study found that taking DES during pregnancy appeared to increase the risk of developing a rare vaginal cancer years later for DES daughters in their teens and 20s.

DES, or diethylstilbestrol (dahy-eth-uhl-stil-bes'-trawl), is a synthetic estrogen that was prescribed to millions of women in the United States, Europe and other countries to prevent miscarriages, premature birth and other problems.

The case in Boston is being closely watched by DES daughters around the country. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed since the 1970s alleging links between DES and cervical and vaginal cancer, as well as infertility problems. Many of those cases were settled before trial. The Boston case is believed to be the first major litigation alleging a link between DES and breast cancer in DES daughters over the age of 40.

MacCormack, now 50, said she was stunned when she was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago after having mammograms every six months since she turned 40 because she had had several benign cysts removed over the years.

"The characteristics of my cancer were for women over 60 typically. It wasn't the type of cancer a 40-year-old or a 44-year-old woman gets," said MacCormack.

"When I read the research that's been done, I found I had more chance of getting it because my mom took DES," she said.

The women's lawyers say their case is supported by a recent study that suggests that breast cancer risk is nearly doubled in DES daughters over the age of 40. The average woman has about a 1 in 50 chance of developing breast cancer by 55. The study, led by Dr. Robert Hoover, a researcher at the National Cancer Institute, found that the chance for DES daughters is 1 in 25.

The lawsuit alleges that 14 drug manufacturers - including Eli Lilly and Co. and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.- withheld from doctors and the FDA reports that showed DES did not prevent miscarriages and raised serious questions about the safety of the drug.

"This drug, DES, was the biggest human experiment of quackery in the history of medicine," said Aaron Levine, a Washington, D.C., lawyer who filed the Boston lawsuit and represents another 18 DES daughters making similar claims.

Representatives and lawyers for Eli Lilly and Bristol-Myers Squibb declined to comment on the lawsuit.

In court and in public documents, the companies argue that a firm link between DES and breast cancer has not been established and that the DES daughters who are suing them have not shown that DES caused their cancers.

"We believe these claims are without merit and are prepared to defend against them vigorously," Eli Lilly said in its most recent annual report.

The drug companies also argue that the medical community does not generally accept that fetal exposure to DES causes breast cancer.

"There is not a single published study, a respected medical treatise or textbook, nor a pronouncement by one of the prominent societies dedicated to the discovery of cancer causes which claims a causal link between prenatal DES exposure and breast cancer has been proven," Bristol-Myers Squibb argued in a motion to exclude the testimony of the plaintiffs' experts.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler has heard testimony from a dozen experts on both sides during a hearing on the drug companies' motions, which argue that the opinions of the women's experts are not based on reliable science.

If Bowler grants the drug companies' motion, the case will not go to trial, Levine said. But if she allows the plaintiffs' experts to testify, the case can proceed to trial.

Final arguments on the motion are scheduled for Jan. 19 in U.S. District Court.

DES was prescribed at a time when medical advice was rarely questioned and drugs were not subjected to the kinds of rigorous clinical trials they are today, said Dr. Michael Grodin, a professor of medical ethics at Boston University's School of Public Health. Grodin said proving a link between DES and the plaintiffs' breast cancer could be difficult.

"There's an issue of causation, but even if it did cause the cancer, that doesn't mean there was negligence," Grodin said.

"The question of negligence is what did they know, when did they know it and what did they do about it? Those are all in contention," he said.

Jackie White, 48, of Centerburg, Ohio, a plaintiff in the lawsuit, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 at age 47. Tests showed 20 tumors in one breast and two pre-cancerous lumps in the other. The cancer had also spread to her lymph nodes. She had a double mastectomy, and did six months of chemotherapy and seven weeks of radiation.

White said her mother, a nurse, told her at age 13 that she had taken DES while pregnant, prompting White to get regular gynecological exams and mammograms over the years. She said she has no family history of breast cancer.

White said it wasn't until she saw high estrogen levels in her pathology reports that she began to wonder whether DES could have caused her cancer.

"I exercise daily. I ate healthy, low-fat, did all of the maintenance screenings that a person needs - self-exams, mammograms, OB-GYN appointments - eliminated the exposure to birth control or things like that, just like doctors recommended," she said.

"I'm not any of the things that are the highest-known reasons for risk factors for breast cancer."

The US Army has partnered with video game designer CTA Digital to introduce a line of gaming peripherals branded with their logo, as part of an effort to appeal to and recruit young gamers.?CTA Digital will manufacture?rifle controllers, backpacks and headsets bearing the army logo. The products will mimic the actual items, and will be available for popular PlayStation Games, like Call of Duty.

The army has used video games to recruit in the past, and even developed their own game, America?s Army, which they created,??to provide civilians with insights on Soldiering from the barracks to the battlefield.? Now, they intend to further familiarize gamers with elements of military service through this partnership.

It?s difficult to measure the success of such recruitment efforts. Also, as?Forbes contributor Paul Tassi points out, recruiting those who excel at Call of Duty may not be the most sensible, because these type of video games, ?have a general policy that requires you to constantly spray bullets to stay alive, as well as shoot first and ask questions later.?
