Kansas City Museum wants to put Union Station ties in the past

Staff Kansas City Business Journal

The Kansas City Museum is considering a new future away from management by Union Station, The Kansas City Star reports.

The museum?s advisory board would work to separate from Union Station Kansas City and form a new tax-exempt organization, according to a draft business plan obtained by The Star. The plan states that the museum would have trouble attaining professional accreditation because of its ties to Union Station.

News of the potential defection comes after Union Station CEO George Guastello fired museum Director Christopher Leitch.

Union Station assumed management of the museum in 2007 and many of the museum?s collections belong to Union Station, The Star reports.

Vigils set in 100 cities over Zimmerman verdict

NEW YORK (AP) ? Thousands of demonstrators from across the country ? chanting, praying and fighting tears ? protested a jury's decision to clear neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager, and organizers say they'll try to maintain the momentum with vigils next weekend.

Rallies on Sunday were largely peaceful as demonstrators voiced their support for 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's family and decried the verdict. Police in Los Angeles said they arrested six people, mostly for failure to disperse, after about 80 protesters gathered in Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard and an unlawful assembly was declared. New York police said at least a dozen people were arrested on disorderly conduct charges during a rally in Times Square.

Advocates want federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman, who was acquitted Saturday in Martin's 2012 shooting death. The Rev. Al Sharpton said Monday that his organization will hold vigils and rallies in 100 cities Saturday in front of federal buildings.

The Justice Department has said it's considering whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges now that Zimmerman has been acquitted in the state case. The department opened an investigation into Martin's death last year but stepped aside to allow the state prosecution to proceed.

Sunday's demonstrations, held in cities from Florida to Wisconsin, attracted anywhere from a few dozen people to a more than a thousand.

At a march and rally in downtown Chicago attended by about 200 people, 73-year-old Maya Miller said the case reminded her of the 1955 slaying of Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was murdered by a group of white men while visiting Mississippi. Till's killing galvanized the civil rights movement.

"Fifty-eight years and nothing's changed," Miller said, pausing to join a chant for "Justice for Trayvon, not one more."

In New York City, more than 1,000 people marched into Times Square on Sunday night, zigzagging through Manhattan's streets to avoid police lines. Sign-carrying marchers thronged the busy intersection, chanting "Justice for! Trayvon Martin!" as they made their way from downtown Union Square, blocking traffic for more than an hour.

In San Francisco and in Los Angeles, where police dispersed an earlier protest with beanbag rounds, police closed streets Sunday.

President Barack Obama, Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson have urged calm. In Oakland, Calif., during protests that began late Saturday night, some angry demonstrators broke windows, burned U.S. flags, vandalized a police squad car and spray-painted anti-police graffiti.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti urged protesters to "practice peace" after rock- and bottle-throwing. Later, more than 100 officers in riot gear converged and ordered people to disperse. A handful of people were given citations, mostly for blocking a street or jaywalking

Rand Powdrill, 41, of San Leandro, Calif., said he marched in San Francisco with about 400 others to "protest the execution of an innocent black teenager."

"If our voices can't be heard, then this is just going to keep going on," he said.

Earlier, at Manhattan's Middle Collegiate Church, many congregants wore hooded sweatshirts similar to the one Martin was wearing the night he was shot. Hoodie-clad Jessica Nacinovich said she could only feel disappointment and sadness over the verdict.

"I'm sure jurors did what they felt was right in accordance with the law but maybe the law is wrong, maybe society is wrong; there's a lot that needs fixing," she said.

At a service in Sanford, Fla., where Zimmerman was tried, teens wearing shirts with Martin's picture wiped away tears during a church sermon.

Protesters also gathered in Atlanta, Miami, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., along with a host of other cities.

In Miami, more than 200 people gathered. "You can't justify murder," read one poster. Another read "Don't worry about more riots. Worry about more Zimmermans."

Carol Reitner, 76, of Miami, said she heard about the vigil through an announcement at her church Sunday morning. "I was really devastated. It's really hard to believe that someone can take the life of someone else and walk out of court free," she said.

In Philadelphia, about 700 protesters marched through downtown to the Liberty Bell, alternating between chanting Trayvon Martin's name and "No justice, no peace!"

"We hope this will begin a movement to end discrimination against young black men," said Johnathan Cooper, one of the protest's organizers. "And also to empower black people and get them involved in the system."

In Atlanta, about 75 protesters chanted and carried signs near Centennial Olympic Park.

"I came out today because a great deal of injustice has been done and I'm very disappointed at our justice system," said Tabatha Holley, 19, of Atlanta.

"I'm just disappointed in America."

Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz says Florida prosecutor in Zimmerman case should be disbarred

Below was copied from Real Clear Politics (and was quoted from FOX NEWS CHANNEL Mike Huckabee show):

MIKE HUCKABEE: You have said that you thought the prosecutor ought to be disbarred, that?s a pretty serious type of violation to get a person disbarred. It is that serious to you?

ALAN DERSHOWITZ: Right, it is. She submitted an affidavit that was, if not perjurious, completely misleading. She violated all kinds of rules of the profession, and her conduct bordered on criminal conduct. She, by the way, has a horrible reputation in Florida. She?s known for overcharging, she?s known for being highly political. And in this case, of course she overcharged. Halfway through the trial she realized she wasn?t going to get a second degree murder verdict, so she asked for a compromised verdict, for manslaughter. And then, she went even further and said that she was going to charge him with child abuse and felony murder. That was such a stretch that it goes beyond anything professionally responsible. She was among the most irresponsible prosecutors I?ve seen in 50 years of litigating cases, and believe me, I?ve seen good prosecutors, bad prosecutors, but rarely have I seen one as bad as this prosecutor, [Angela] Cory. Episcopal Church Weighs Ban on Straight White Males

Episcopal Church gays and lesbians are weighing a resolution to be put forward at the next General Convention making it illegal for straight white males to be admitted to the priesthood.

LA Bishop Mary Glasspool, an avowed lesbian and one of many lesbians and gays supporting the "no white males resolution", crafted her resolution after hearing a straight white male preaching a sermon condemning homosexual behavior last month.

"I was shocked, stunned, blown away and mortified. I have never heard such homophobia coming from a pulpit. That was my moment to say enough is enough.

"This comes down to a choice between misogynistic white males versus gays and lesbians in an ever shrinking church and LGBTQI folk who insist they should be able to get laid by whomever, whenever because G-d loves them just the way they are, and we choose justice, inclusion and integrity."

Bishop Glasspool said she has the support of bishops like Gene Robinson, Otis Charles, Frank Griswold, clergy like Susan Russell and pedophiles and sexual abusers like Bede Parry and many more gays who have yet to come out of the closet. She said the resolution would keep out men who only had a penile interest in women, hate-mongers, homophobes, and other gay hating types. She said she was deeply moved by the late Ronald Haines Bishop of Washington who unofficially adopted that policy when he was bishop there. It worked so well the diocese is now being largely sustained financially by the Soper Fund.

"Straight white males are only good for breeding future gays if we can screw up the family relationships early enough in their lives, but we do not want them preaching, running churches, and definitely not bishop material, it's an insult to our dignity and integrity," opined Glasspool.

But a straight white bishop, the Rt. Rev. Gregory Brewer (CF), believes that the total ban on straight white males goes "too far". He is proposing a less draconian resolution that would allow some white men who love women to remain in the Episcopal Church as associate rectors and vicars.

Glasspool concurred. "The Episcopal Church needs white males to clean up the refreshments in the kitchen on Sunday morning after the service is over. Men can clean the pews and the elements and lick plates in case the water is turned off because of an unpaid water bill," said Glasspool, noting that a large number of churches bordered on extinction owing to the collapse of heterosexual marriages.

"If they show that they can do those things and stay out of church politics, there might just be a pathway to ordination if they behave themselves and subject themselves to women priests some of whom have strong sado-masochistic tendencies."

This raises serious questions of the woman's sanity. One cannot believe that even in a corrupted Obamanist era Church, anyone can be ordained who is totally unfamiliar with the Bible. Based upon that premise, this woman is obviously delusional.

The ECUSA has an enormous amount of financial resources - not just land and buildings, but cash and securities holdings from generations of bequests and donations.

The goal of this crew is drive away as many believers as possible while keeping the resources.

Imagine having a congregation of 50 aging liberals. You conduct one service per week - one hour's work.

In return, you are paid over $100,000 per year, you live rent-free in a lavish home, you drive a parish car, you have unlimited free time and a gold-plated retirement and health package.

All you need is a majority of the parish trustees and a cooperative bishop and you are on the gravy train for life.

It's a ploy. To force mainstream Christian churches to allow LGBT's as pastors.

Whatever ammunition is used against them in this case will be returned when churches refuse to recognize minority males turned females as candidates for the priesthood.

That?s precisely the case.

Churches have always attracted rent-seekers of a certain type. In this case excess money and no outside feedback seems to have corrupted it completely. They can in fact run their scam for as long as they like, even if their congregations decline into triviality.

In the old days the Anglicans came close to this, being not answerable to their congregations or communities, but arguably were kept out of trouble as the local landowners had the authority to appoint local clergymen. Often abused for political reasons or to give ne?er do well younger sons something to do, but most often exercised responsibly. Kept the institution tied closely both to the people and the aristocracy.

This system broke down there, with the decline of the aristocracy, and the infection spread.

When other churches or religions suffer from corrupt episodes though, the ?media? notices. A mafia living off the Episcopal corpse doesn?t seem to have attracted much notice.

Glasspool added, they will also be required to:

1. Memorize, and be able to recite fully, the Vagina Monologues, one of the additional books to our bible.

2. Begin their conversion to the female gender within months, and carry around a Church ID card with a picture clearly depicting what their new Vagina will look like.

Strict guidelines will be applied, i.e., no bikini waxes/trims, etc. A full and natural Vagina hair patch will be required to be maintained at all times, along with equivalent armpit hair -- and inspections will be performed, to compare their Vagina ID to their newly acquired Vagina, on a schedule defined by their female bishop.

However, to show that we are more merciful than God, we will allow the men to comb their Vagina patch, parted down the middle -- but NO combovers, hair tinting, or spiked hair styles will be allowed!

3. All additional rules to be identified in the upcoming "Lesbian Women Aren't Going To Take Any More Guff From God!" conference next month in San Francisco, USA. It is a George Soros/Barak Obama sponsored event.

The gentleman wasn't simply volunteering his opinion about same-sex sexual relationships ma'am. The Holy Bible clearly condemns such relationships. In fact, Romans 1:22-27 indicates that such relationships are a consequence of idolatry, disobedience of the 1st Commandment.

"I was shocked, stunned, blown away and mortified. I have never heard such homophobia coming from a pulpit. That was my moment to say enough is enough."

Why any non-homosexual male of any race would want to attend any ECUSA "church" that has not already exited that denomination is beyond my understanding.

It's a ploy. To force mainstream Christian churches to allow LGBT's as pastors.

Whatever ammunition is used against them in this case will be returned when churches refuse to recognize minority males turned females as candidates for the priesthood.

?Q? is for Questioning

When I first read this I thought it had to either be from The Onion, or satire. Guess not.

I was raised in the Episcopalian church, but bowed out decades ago. They were creepy back then and their "all gay, all the time" agenda has only made them creepier.

Having set out on a path of self-destruction, their eventual demise will not be a surprise and they won't be missed. Back when I attended Episcopalian masses, they perverted God's word and now they're perverting it even more.

Chesapeake baseball player striking out cancer

Updated yesterday at 10:14 PM

NORFOLK- Usually, a baseball pitcher's wins come on the field, but Mark Young's win came off the diamond.

In 2006, Mark was a promising pitcher at Norfolk State University. ?He was even scouted by the New York Mets. That is, until his parents noticed a lump in the back of his neck. They urged Mark to see a doctor. That same night, The Chesapeake man was diagnosed with brain cancer.

"The first thing that went through my mind was, am I going to die?," he recalled.

Mark battled to stay alive and his parents were with him during every moment.

Dreams of a professional baseball career were put on hold.?

Thanks to his mom, Penny Young, and the folks at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters and Virginia Oncology, Mark learned to walk, talk, and do simple, everyday things again.

Mark was 21 years old. Penny had to help him take showers, dress and feed him and her love helped pull him through.

"You don't give up and I didn't give up on him," Penny said.

Mark didn't give up on himself, thanks in large part to some valuable friends - some at Norfolk Apostolic Church, where the power of prayer gave him inner strength, and his?trainer at One Life Fitness Gym in Norfolk. ?Jackie helped him build his physical strength.

With their love and encouragement and a leg brace for support, Mark recently pulled off a great accomplishment -- he ran on his own for the first time in more than six years.

"I was like, 'I'm doing it! I'm doing it!'" Mark said.

Mark is cancer free and back on his feet again. His buddies have a jersey waiting for him when he can join their recreational softball team. It's not the major leagues, but being able to get back on any pitcher's mound is Mark's dream now.?

He hopes his story will inspire others dealing with their own battles with cancer.

"Battle. Don't take things for granted," Mark said. "That's one thing I really want to get across, is never give up."

Robin Thicke has already raised temperatured and dropped skirts (literally) with ?Blurred Lines? but the crooner?s sexual revolution is far from over with new track ?Take It Easy On Me? covering similarly steamy ground. The Timbaland-produced club-banger owes a debt to Madonna?s 2008 single ?4 Minutes? ? at least as far as the bone-rattling beats are concerned.

The lyrics are a different matter. Blue-eyed soul?s new poster boy sings about shopping for underwear and ripping fancy clothes. He also laments: ?When I look right through your dress, I want your cherry pie.? I?m not American, so this reference might be lost on me but I don?t think he?s talking about food. Listen to the radio-ready hit after the jump.

Missed Deadlines, Lost Wedding Certificates, and Baffling Incompetence: Welcome to the Home Office

Before I say anything else, allow me to be the first to admit that immigration is a sticky topic. The unavoidable truth is that immigration is one of those topics where both extreme views are incorrect. It is, indeed, true that the UK cannot take on an unlimited number of immigrants from all over the world, no matter how well-educated, well-adjusted, and well-prepared they are for life in the UK. The opposite is also true: The UK economy would suffer greatly from not taking in any immigrants at all.

There are migrant workers coming to the UK every year, boosting the country?s GDP, and generating a large amount of money for the tax coffers. Banking, the oil industry, the high-tech industries, and the burgeoning special effects industry are but a few examples where foreign expertise is absolutely crucial. Chuck out all the foreign talent and these industries ? and many more besides ? would collapse in on themselves.

So, whilst immigration is undoubtedly a tricky subject, the UK government has navigated itself into a bit of an impossible corner. On the one hand, it has very publicly said it is going to limit the amount of migration to the UK. The sticky part is that there are parts of the migration patterns it cannot do anything about, due to international treaties etc. Specifically, the EU?s right to move and reside anywhere within the EU is without limits.

Is the unlimited right to roam within the EEA area a good idea? I don?t particularly have an opinion either way, but that?s the law, and the upshot is that it becomes impossible to turn away an EU citizen who rocks up at the border with a knapsack and an eager eye for opportunity.

I think this touches on one of the points that often falls by the wayside when people talk about migration. It?s about people ? people like you and me. People who have decided to make one of the biggest and most important decisions in their lives: To pick up their entire existence, leaving friends, family, and the familiar behind, moving to a new country.

If it appears that I know more about EEA migration than any other sound-of-mind adult might know, it is because I am one of those immigrants.

Fresh Off the Boat

About thirteen years ago, I was fresh off the boat (literally, although I hasten to add that disembarking at Newcastle is less glamorous than it might sound), heading off to Liverpool to start my journalism university course. As someone who had grown up in Norway (with a population of less than 5 million?), the big shiny lights of Liverpool, the unfeasibly short skirts, and the incredible amounts of Stella consumed by my peers (and, later, by myself), was something to behold. ?My god,? I remember thinking. ?So this is what the big world is like.?

At the beginning, I had no intention of staying in the UK. Over the years, however, my plan to go back to Oslo at the end of my journalism degree fell by the wayside, and I set up my first company soon after I left university. Liverpool was my gateway drug, as it were; for all its quirks, it showed me a few of the things that makes the UK a great place to live.

Fast forward the best part of a decade. I?m living in London; I?ve just had an idea for a new product (which, two years and six employees later, is turning out to be a rather promising success), and I?m doing pretty well. However, something is over-shadowing everything else in my life: I?m in love.

?

Then, Love Strikes

Yes, I am ? truly, properly, and very much in love. She?s hot (why not!), awesome (of course), talented (what else) and from the USA (unfortunately). She?s here in the UK with some obscure job description that basically translates into ?I blow shit up inside computers for a living, so you can enjoy your Hollywood movies just that little bit more?. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, she works in Visual Effects ? one of those industries that would have died a horrible death if it hadn?t been for foreign talent.

From here, for the next few years, it?s a pretty standard tale of boy-meets-girl, boy-and-girl-go-travelling-around-the-world, boy-and-girl-move-to-South-America-for-a-year, boy-proposes-to-girl, girl-says-yes, girl-narrowly-avoids-turning-into-bridezilla, and so on and so forth.

We got married at the tail-end of 2012, and were then planning to return to the UK. By now, that little idea I came up with was running gangbusters, and my bonnie lass was ready for a change of career ? no longer wanting to work in special effects, she was showing her Silicon Valley roots by seeking work at a tech start-up.

But first, we have to get a Magical Piece of Paper from the Home Office, confirming that she is not one of them illegals. Of course, that would be easy, right? I am an EU citizen, she is married to an EU citizen; I have a job, we have a lovely flat, and we are married ? happy, and rosy as can be, right?

I?ll just wait for a few seconds until you?ve stopped laughing at our na?vet?.

?

Enter the Home Office

Enter stage left, the incredible, hulking beast that is the Home Office. If I were to visualise the experience, I would imagine one of those incredible WWF wrestling entries, probably set to some in-your-face punk song by The Exploited, where, among explosions, strobe lighting, and smoke, a lanky, 6-ft, 150 lbs nerd enters the arena, in full confidence that despite their physical appearance, they have the full might of the Home Office and all the land?s border patrol forces behind them.

Imagine at this point, if you will, that was-never-really-that-funny Little Britain sketch where the Computer Says No.

Under the particular piece of legislation which I was planning to bring that filthy-immigrant-wot-came-from-overseas into the UK, it should all be pretty straightforward. The logic ought to go a little something like this: As an European Economic Area (EEA) Citizen, the European Union has guaranteed you the right to move and reside freely anywhere within the EEA. (see Directive 2004/38/EC on the right to move and reside freely, if that?s your thing). Being married to yours sincerely, my ball and chains should be able to enter the country and get an EEA Residence card. I?ll skip all the boring legal stuff, but if you?re feeling particularly masochistic, check out the rather fetching Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2006, which deals with all the (surprisingly readable) legalise of what we?re talking about here.

?

Fighting Hard to Get a Piece of Paper We Don?t Need

The fun part is that my lovely wife doesn?t actually even need this piece of paper. In fact, on the UK Border Agency site, they eludiate ?You do not need to obtain documents confirming your right of residence in the UK if you are a family member of an EEA national?, but then, in a delightful display of dry wit and profound understatement, goes on to say that if you don?t, you ?may have difficulty proving that you are lawfully resident in the UK?; that it?d be a right royal pain in the arse to re-enter the UK if you go abroad, and that you ?may find it difficult to obtain or change employment.? So essentially, what they?re saying is that you don?t need this piece of paper, but if you don?t, you?re buggered six ways ?till Sunday.

So, being keen to be immigrants of the legal variety, we submit our EEA2 form, which means that ? by law?? the Home Office has to issue within six months. We send off our application, and we wait. Four months go by. Five months. Surely, we?ll hear something soon? Six months go by. ?Hey,? we hear you ask. ?What happens when the UK Border Agency breaks English Law, and takes longer than the legally prescribed six months to send out a residence permit?? Yeah, we don?t know either, but if my very American wife has her way, she?d have sued them a long time ago. How?s that for introducing some cultural diversity into the UK, colonies style. Or, ?If they think they can get rid of me that easily,? as she growled at the time, ?They?re fucking up the wrong tree.?

And with that delightful mixed metaphor in the bank, our waiting continued.

?

Computer Says ?No?

Eventually, the Home Office did get back to us, rejecting our EEA2 application, because they had only received copies of my payslips, which they claimed was not sufficient evidence of me exercising my EU treaty rights to live in the UK.

Oh-oh. As far as we can, we run a paperless company ? the ?originals? of my payslips are PDF documents. How do they expect us to give them the originals? Is it somehow a better solution to open the files in a Hex editor, and print out the source code for the files? Should we have submitted the originals on an USB stick? What does ?original? even mean in a digital world where copies are indistinguishable from their originals?

More importantly: why, in the name of all that is holy, couldn?t the Home Office have contacted us? The second they opened the envelope and the copies of the payslips tumbled out, they?d have been able to spot that something wasn?t quite ?official? enough.

In a world where people were sensible, effective, and gave half a hoot about their jobs, the timeline ought to have been have been something like this: Minute 1: Open envelope. Minute 2: ?Oh dear, something is wrong?. Minute 5: e-mail us. Minute 10: I?ll send them the ?original? PDFs of my payslips. Plus any additional documentation they need to ?prove? I?m working. Issue resolved.

Instead, this takes more than six months, and they refuse our application.

After that, the true misery begins, of course. My lovely wife was offered a job in the meantime, but that part is now in limbo (even after we attempt to contact the Home Office and explain to them that there?s nothing we?d love more than to start paying taxes to the UK government. PLEASE LET US PAY YOU OUR TAXES. No dice), and it looks like she may be turned down for the job, because they need someone to start earlier.

So, we start our long and arduous climb up the slippery pole that is the appeals process.

?

Will Nobody Think of the Trees?

Receiving an EEA residence permit really is a formality: apparently it used to be possible to rock up at an office with a pair of passports, a marriage certificate, a couple of pay slips and a tenancy agreement, and they?d stamp the EEA residence card into your passport there and then. The whole process would take less than a day. As far as I can tell, the underpinning laws haven?t changed, but the process has morphed from a 4-hour process to a 4,400 hour process. Yes, it now takes about a thousand times longer than only a couple of years ago.

I should at this point propose a minute of silence for all the trees that had to die in order for my lovely lass to be in the UK. To ?prove? that my payslips and all the other documents we had digitally are ?originals?, I had to purchase a rubber stamp. ?A rubber stamp?? I asked the lawyer. ?Yes, a rubber stamp. It?s only thirty quid or so. Buy one,? he said. ?But if it?s only ?30, and I can have a rubber stamp made of pretty much anything in the world, how does it prove that anything is official?? I wondered. ?It?s the home-office,? he said. ?Logic does not apply. Oh, and while you?re at it, get some letter-headed paper, too.?

So, we kill half a forest by way of a trusty if slightly battered Brother laser-printer. We create a few tonnes of carbon emissions in having the bank send me 12 months worth of bank statements which are all individually sent in separate envelopes. (In case you were wondering, it is pretty daunting to receive twelve envelopes from your bank all at once).

As we?re putting our appeal together, my (now deeply disgruntled) wife has realised we never received our original wedding certificate in return. This, dear reader, is a problem, because some might argue that this piece of paper is Expensive and Important. She sends a letter to the UK Border Agency, asking for our marriage certificate back, and quickly, if you please.

?

Then, They Lose Our Marriage Certificate

In return, we receive the most insidious letter I?ve received in my life. ?EO2 LNC21,? as our case worker is known (god forbid we?d actually get a real name of the person who is deciding our fate) claims that the ?application was seen and decided by myself,? and that ?there was no marriage certificate in your application.?

If we ignore for a second that this case worker wasn?t able to spell the name of their own agency correctly (unless we somehow sent our application to the wrong department, and the ?UK Boarder Agency? is something to do with skate-, snow- or wakeboarding), he or she also mentions that ?the application did not contain a covering letter stating the contents of the application,? and that ?the only record this office has that there may have been a marriage certificate included in this application is the application form.? The absolutely incredible thing about the latter statement is that we definitely included both our marriage certificate and a cover letter confirming that we had included it. How can I be so sure? Well, because they returned it to us, along with our letter refusing the application.

In a way, you?d almost forgive the Home Office and the Border agency for their ineptness if it were an one-off ? but the biggest surprise in this adventure is how unsurprised everybody is about all of this. In fact, everybody we have spoken to (including the ever-so-delightful editor of this very website), has a cornucopia of horror stories. Everyone seems to accept it as a fact that the Home Office is about as useful as (but a lot less cute than) a blind baby sloth, and that any time you have to deal with them you should expect ineptitude, inefficiency, and a necessity to grow accustomed to an all-penetrating, seething anger that penetrates your frontal lobe for months on end.

?

Clueless or evil?

A man more cynical than I would accuse the UK Border Agency of putting artificial hindrances in the way for people from the EU (and their family members), because they are trying to dissuade potential migrants from EEA countries as much as possible. Would that be legal? Absolutely not. Do they care? Well?If actions speak louder than words, then I?ll leave you to judge for yourself.

It is very hard to explain exactly how powerless you feel when you?re facing a huge government agency which doesn?t appear to pay much attention to its own laws. Doubly so when what ought to be a simple formality becomes an unsurpassable wall that stands between the right-here-right-now, and being able to start a life in the UK as productive members of society.

We?d love to work. We?d love to start paying taxes. We?d love to be a shiny example of exactly the kind of immigrants you?d like to have in the country.

Now if only the Home Office would let us.

More Chinese cities likely to curb auto sales - industry group

BEIJING | Thu Jul 11, 2013 9:47am BST

BEIJING (Reuters) - Eight more cities in China, the world's biggest auto market, are likely to announce policies restricting new vehicle purchases, an official at the automakers association said, as Beijing tries to control air pollution.

Shi Jianhua, deputy secretary general at the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), did not give details on the new measures and there has been no word from the government.

But the industry group warned the planned restrictions could cut vehicle sales by 400,000 units, equivalent to 2 percent of domestic sales in 2012.

"We shouldn't simply adopt restrictive policies as they have seriously dampened demand of the people," Shi told a news conference on Wednesday.

"It's not good for the healthy development of the Chinese auto industry or the formation of an harmonious auto society."

Kiyotaka Ise, president of Toyota Motor Corp's luxury Lexus brand, said he would welcome any measures that give incentives for the purchase of hybrid gasoline-electric cars.

"Given the size of the market, 2 percent is a lot," he told reporters in Tokyo, referring to the effect on sales of the possible restrictions.

"If the goal is to improve air quality there could be a business opportunity for hybrid cars," he added. "Perhaps there is a possibility that low-polluting hybrids could be exempt from restrictions."

In June, sales of German cars accounted for 26 percent of total sales in China, followed by Chinese vehicles at 25 percent, Japanese with 18 percent and U.S. cars with 16 percent, according to CAAM data.

Four Chinese cities - Beijing, Shanghai, Guiyang and Guangzhou - already restrict vehicles on the road by using auctions and lotteries to sell a limited number of license plates.

The new curbs will likely include major provincial centres like Chengdu, Chongqing and Wuhan, Shi said.

Details of any restrictions are likely to be announced by city governments. Officials at the Ministry of Transport did not respond to requests for comment.

LIMITED IMPACT

Analysts said CAAM's prediction on the possible impact of the new curbs may be an exaggeration and aimed at lobbying the government against such changes.

"I don't think eight more cities will suddenly implement curbs at the same time, especially when China's economy is facing downward pressure and the central government is encouraging domestic consumption." said Wu Wenzhao, analyst at Sinolink Securities.

The new Chinese leadership under president Xi Jinping has made improving the quality of life for Chinese citizens a centrepiece of policy, but stubborn air pollution has become an example of the challenge Beijing faces.

Last month, the State Council, or China's cabinet, approved a slew of measures to combat air pollution, including accelerating the installation of pollution control equipment on small, coal-fuelled refineries and curbing the growth of high-energy-consuming industries like steel, cement, aluminium, and glass.

The government has made similar promises over the last decade, but enforcement has often been lacking, especially at the local level.

Chinese cities rank among the most polluted in the world, and smog clouds over eastern China, visible from orbit, are easily found online.

Chinese air pollution is driven by many factors, in particular by the country's dependence on coal-fired power plants, but particulate pollution has been aggravated by a culture that has passionately embraced the automobile as a symbol of status.

The possible restrictions on new vehicle purchases come at a time when automakers are bracing for another tepid year of growth in a market that has been hit by a slowing economy as well as rising fuel costs.

A Beijing-based auto maker executive said this type of sudden surge in restrictions was nothing new in China but admitted that not all firms were ready to deal with it.

"Some of us are on a factory opening binge." said the executive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

General Motors said in April it will add four new plants in the next three years in China to bring its production capacity to 5 million vehicles a year.

"There's huge risk if companies are not adding manufacturing capacity in China in a measured manner," the executive said.

Project Utopia: Roleplayers Wanted!!

Hey, I'm placevalue, and I'm advertizing an RP that I made called Project Utopia. The roleplay is about a study where you are selected to live for two years in one of three "Utopian" worlds. The rising Society (intent on taking over the major countries), is conducting the study to find out which "Utopia" causes the least rebellion.

I really hope you join, as of NOW you would be the FIRST (or one of the first) character, so you have way more freedom than you will later on. Join today and spread the word! I am writing a book based on this premise and (with you guy's permission, of course) might include these ideas in my book.

A Message from your Society:
Joining this roleplay would really help you contribute to the everlasting peace of the Society.;D

Waiting until I rule the world...........it might take a while.

How to handle 2 feuding workers ? Business Management Daily ...

It happens in every workplace: Two em??ployees have a classic personality conflict and bicker constantly. Due to the nature of their jobs, they must interact with each other. What?s the best way to stop their petty squabbling?

You?re the boss: Put your foot down. Tell both employees in no uncertain terms that they need to put their petty differences behind them.?While they do not have to like each other, they do need to act professionally and respectfully.

Manage their performance only; do not try to solve their interpersonal differences if they are not job-related. Finally, warn them of potential disciplinary consequences if their behavior does not change.

Don?t allow the employees to give you excuses or point the finger at the other person. They must take responsibility for their own behavior, and the expectations you have defined for them are not up for negotiation.

A study made with 191 patients reveal that symptoms of hyperactivity due to the deficit of attention and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are associated with more impulsivity and more severity, and probably a worse prognosis in patients with eating disorders.

ADHD in adults is poorly investigated and, although several studies have reported associations between this disorder and abnormal eating behaviour, so far it had not been described associations between ADHD and eating disorders in adults.

The results of the study conducted by researchers from the group of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) and the Unit of Eating Behaviour Disorders of the Bellvitge University Hospital, with the colaboration of the Department of Psychiatry of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, have been published in the online edition of the journal BMC Psychiatry.

Impulsivity

ADHD symptoms related to hyperactivity such as impulsivity are very present in patients with eating disorders who participated in the study, but not in everyone, as explained Fernando Fernndez-Aranda, head of the Unit of Eating Behavior Disorders of the Bellvitge University Hospital and IDIBELL researcher. These disorders "are found mainly in patients with a more impulsive personality: people suffering bulimia, binge eating disorders and unspecific eating disorders. On the other hand, more restrictive anorexic patients and those with more ability to control themselves do not show these symptoms."

This research has allowed to develop a model that could be clinically useful for early detection of risk factors which could lead to an eating disorder.

ADHD symptoms are positively associated with impulsive personality traits and age. More impulsive and older patients have an increased risk of developing an eating disorder. Impulsivity is also associated with a greater severity of the disorder.

Moreover, these impulsivity ADHD symptoms are associated with low self-direction, a character trait that involves the ability to planning and achieving objectives in the medium and long-term. "So, patients with ADHD symptoms also have a worse prognosis because it is harder for them to be able to accomplish a treatment", says Fernndez-Aranda.

Reward system

According to Fernndez-Aranda, this model will be useful not only in the clinic but also for investigating brain circuits that regulate the reward system and that are similar in several behavioural pathologies such as eating disorders, pathological gambling and other behavioural addictions.

More information

Bulimia. Eating behaviour disorder that primarily affects women between 18 and 30 concerned about their image. They usually start a diet to lose weight but they lose control and start shortly episodes of binge eating several times a day. After suffering the loss of control, they look for ways to compensate: 80% of them vomit and the rest make exercise disproportionately or restrict food for a while. The process is repeated up to seven or eight vomiting-binge episodes per day.

Binge Eating Disorder. The 90-95% of patients suffering from this eating disorder are obese persons who use food as an escape valve. Faced with emotional problems, they lose control and eat compulsively. They do not enjoy food like other obese people do.

Anorexia. Eating behaviour disorder that affects women between 14 and 30 years. It is characterized by an excessive preoccupation with the image and a distorted self-image. The affected follow a strict diet to lose weight. They can lose up to 15% of their normal weight and are afraid of gaining weight. 40% of the cases are restrictive, the rest combines binge eating and vomiting.
