Congo rebels retreat to Sake

GOMA, Congo (AP) ? A rebel spokesman in Congo says his fighters have pulled back several miles (kilometers) to the town of Sake and are on track to leave the eastern city of Goma on Friday, in accordance with a deadline imposed by the nations neighboring Congo.

Sake is 27 kilometers (18 miles) outside of Goma, and was taken last week by the M23 rebels right after the fall of Goma. The capture of Goma along the Rwandan border in mineral-rich east Congo was one of the most humiliating defeats for the enormous but inept Congolese military.

Rebel spokesman Lt. Col. Vianney Kazarama told The Associated Press on Thursday: "We are withdrawing. Tomorrow we will (retreat to) Goma," on track to leave the city as asked. Rebels patrolled streets of Goma Thursday morning.

In Defense of Courtship | Psych Central

In Defense of Courtship?A froggy went a-courtin? he did ride. . .?
~ From a 16th-century English folk song

Courtship. It?s such an old-fashioned word that some might find its use today to be quaint. Over the last few decades, courtship has gone the way of scented love letters and rotary telephones. In the push for more freedom of choice in relationships, courtship rituals have almost disappeared from American culture.

Yes, people still like romance ? as in candlelight dinners and walks on the beach ? but the structures and traditions that led from initial attraction to marriage have fallen by the wayside. Many couples move from attraction to renting a truck and moving in, no genuine commitment required. Going ?a-courtin?,? the slow wooing of another person and the gradual development of closeness and affection, seems to have all but disappeared.

The result of this hurried intimacy is a great deal of confusion. When sharing a bed and a life and maybe even a child comes before the sharing of long talks about values and goals and deep explorations of each other?s personality and history, couples often are set up for heartbreak. When things don?t turn out as expected, some couples are able to recognize their mistake, wish each other well and let the relationship go. But others, not at all sure what true commitment is about, fight with each other and with themselves to hang on. Cheating becomes the substitute for the dating and sorting out that should have occurred before moving in. Trust becomes yet another thing to fight about.

Everyone is a victim in this scenario, especially when the couple has had children. The kids end up without the stable home and loving family every child deserves. The women often end up single-mothering and struggling. The men often end up paying child support for children they may seldom see or becoming burdened with unanticipated responsibilities. Sometimes the couple manages to co-parent responsibly and well and remain friends. But even in these best-case instances, both now are looking for partners who may not want to deal with children or continued involvement with an ?ex.? Those without kids are not unscathed either. They have wasted years in a relationship that left them with trust issues and heartache.

All this can be avoided by bringing courtship back into style. I?m not talking about ?courtship? as defined by the Christian right, where couples remain chaste and parents are fully involved in every stage of the developing relationship (although that is certainly one way to go about it). I?m talking about a period of time during which a couple who is attracted to each other takes it slow and gets to know each other well before deciding they are exclusive, before planning to move in, and, by all means, before making a baby. Courtship isn?t dating.

Dating is step 1. Dating means going out with a number of people to see what kind of person is likely to be a fit. Dating is getting to know a number of people you are attracted to by going out for coffee or hanging together with friends or maybe going to a movie or a concert. Picking from a selection of one is unwise, no matter how interesting he or she may be. When the relationship hits a rough patch, as all relationships do, you?ll start wondering about what it would be like if only you had chosen someone more intelligent, more witty, or more competent on the dance floor. Dating a few people before making a choice gives you the chance to see just what kind of person fits your unique personality and your dreams.

Courtship is step 2. Courtship comes when you think you?ve found that special someone. It is the period between your initial choice and committing to making a life together. It?s a time for talks about everything and anything. Long walks and intimate dinners provide the time and the context for exciting, in-depth exploration of another person. It?s a time for learning about each other?s history, beliefs, values, and goals. It?s a time for deciding whether you think similarly about the use of time and money and your expectations about who will do what if you live together. It gives you a chance to experience how each responds to conflict and challenges as well as to easy cooperation.

Larger questions ? such as whether you want children, the role of in-laws in your life, and how decisions will be made ? get visited and revisited as the relationship gains depth and seriousness. Steady affection and care get added to the initial sexual excitement. Each learns how to cherish and nurture the other. When a couple is a good fit, they discover that they both love and like the person they are with and they like who they are when they are together.

Commitment is step 3. Relationships that last, that deepen and ripen into a long marriage and satisfying parenting, are built on a solid foundation. That foundation needs to be built over time and with care. If ?courtship? is too old-fashioned of a term, call it something else, but don?t skip over the process. When that process is done well, both members of a couple become secure in the knowledge that they are each going to give 100 percent to the relationship and to the family they plan to build together. Only then should there be talk of marriage and sharing a home, a life, and a baby.

(AP) ? Amid the ash, broken glass and melted sewing machines at what is left of the Tazreen Fashions Ltd. factory, there are piles of blue, red and off-white children's shorts bearing Wal-Mart's Faded Glory brand. Blue and off-white shorts from hip-hop star Sean Combs' ENYCE label lay on the floor and are stacked in cartons.

An Associated Press reporter searching the factory Wednesday found those clothes and others, including sweaters from the French company Teddy Smith, among the charred equipment in the fire that killed 112 workers Saturday. He also found entries in account books indicating that the factory took orders to produce clothes for Disney, Sears and other Western brands.

Garments and documents left behind in the factory show it was used by a host of major American and European retailers, though at least one of them ? Wal-Mart ? had been aware of safety problems. Wal-Mart blames a supplier for using Tazreen Fashions without its knowledge.

The fire has elevated awareness of something labor groups, retailers and governments have known for years: Bangladesh's fast-growing garment industry ? second only to China's in exports ? is rife with dangerous workplaces. More than 300 workers there have died in fires since 2006.

Police on Wednesday arrested three factory officials suspected of locking in the workers who died in Saturday's fire, the deadliest in the South Asian country's less than 35-year history of exporting clothing.

Local police chief Habibur Rahman said three were arrested and will be questioned about the fire amid reports that many workers trying to escape the blaze had been locked inside. He said the owner of the factory was not among those arrested.

The officials were arrested Wednesday at their homes in Savar, the Dhaka suburb where the factory is also located.

Rahman did not identify the factory officials or give their job status.

Workers who survived the fire say exit doors were locked, fire extinguishers didn't work and managers had told them to go back to work after the fire alarm rang. A fire official has said that far fewer people would have died if there had been just one emergency exit.

Windows at the eight-story factory are broken, sewing machines melted or burned to ash. Much of the clothing on the lower floors was incinerated. Nightgowns, children's shorts, pants, jackets and sweat shirts were strewn about, piled up in some places, boxed in others.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Interior Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir have said arson is suspected. Police say they have not ruled out sabotage.

Wal-Mart had received an audit deeming the factory "high risk" last year, said it had decided to stop doing business with Tazreen, but that a supplier subcontracted work to the factory anyway. Wal-Mart said it stopped working with that supplier on Monday.

Calls made to The Walt Disney Company and to Sears Holdings were not immediately returned.

Local TV reports said about 3,000 garment workers held protests over the fire Wednesday, blocking roads and throwing stones at some factories and vehicles. It was the third straight day of demonstrations, and as they did previously, factories in the area closed to avoid violence.

Police used batons to disperse the protesters, but no injuries were immediately reported.

According to local television, most factories in the area closed after opening briefly because of the protests ? a common tactic to avoid violence.

How To Choose An Appropriate Web Hosting Service Supplier ...

Blog search engine marketing has presently absent essential to produce online business online! All our financial commitment and initiative go in vain if our internet sites may not be obvious into the lookup queries correlated to our marketplace. It?s of no use to acquire a web site that is certainly invisible towards citizens that are looking out products and expert services regarding our online business. I imply to mention, if our web site won?t are available in the very first site on the research gains, there may be considerably less potential for doing opportunity with it.

Now the query is of coming in into the leading ten final results inside of just number of times. Is it attainable to achieve that goal? Indeed the website seo ways has made it conceivable. But your concern may possibly be normally! You will be pondering your site?s terrible performance! You will have by now expended 1000s of funds but until deprived of that prospect! You can not determine out instantly the result in. Definitely the situation is couple of issues done from the optimizers of your respective online pages.

You might be pondering that it?s not possible for your requirements to uncover the flaws in the web-site seo! But I guarantee you that you just can discover out the faults. All you may be supposed to undertake can be to adhere to the strategies about the faults creep into the web-sites and get the job done as obstacle to produce it to your top notch search success. From the way, we are going to bifurcate our discourse based on ?on page? and ?off page? webpage seo. Let us commence with ?on page? optimization.

To begin with slip-up in on webpage optimization is keyword choice. The optimizers must recognize the audience, site?s internet marketing business and therefore the trend within the look for. The key words have to be set accordingly.
Irrelevant content material into the prospective buyers. Subject matter must offer particular description and presentation of products and solutions or services to consumer research. Never stuff keywords and phrases and enable it to be dreadful to read through.
In coding, URLs and tags must be perfectly optimized. For insufficient practical knowledge, title tags are lengthy. The meta key terms & description are stuffed with many keywords. And URL is wrongly optimized. These are typical nonsense.
No restriction on use of too many javascripts, unnecessary flash and other application. For over use the javascripts and large flash applications site load time increases and visitors go away.
There is restriction for the search crawlers. Wrongly in online site search engine optimization, only home site is allowed to become crawled, even if other pages are important and can bring people.
Somehow, SEOs forget that in websites search engine marketing update has importance. Either the site is not going to get update in contents or so much update is produced that SEO strategy fails.

Allow us appear now on the issues in off web page optimization. It?s same way important in websites search engine marketing. Any wrong step in this process only leads to no man?s land. Let?s see how:

Commence social networking without unique goal. The social networking is a great means to get traffic but there has got to be individual focus on for making group and target network from the process.
The important aspect of off web page webpage search engine optimization is always to fully grasp the craze. The research policy needs to be good to use news, blogs, and article to draw traffic towards the site.
The solid and proper process of link building must be manufactured. Links are exchanged and traded with irrelevant internet sites. This prepares wrong conception for the search engines and website page rank fall.
Usually do not submit to many web directories and look for engines, stick to special number of only. The process needs to be balanced and relevant and mind it, Google isn?t really final ? yahoo and bing and others are there.
Escape failing to convince clients about time limits while in the internet site search engine marketing. SEOs fail earning clients fully grasp that SEO effects come after particular time not now and then.

In this way I have tried in making you figure out that website search engine marketing is a great task of patience, data and off course proper planning. The above points could very well come to some many people as footling or common, but a careful look to an internet site will show that there are these blunders. So for web page search engine optimization it will be important to search out everyone that are experienced and proven record in showing successes. Ultimately remember your site has got to get finest rank. And it?s probable with flawless seo.

Local Voices ? Genuine estate law

Nov 19 2012

Real estate law: Not for you?

Real estate is indeed 1 of the safest investments and a lot of individuals use real estate as an investment avenue. True estate law is not the forte of true estate attorneys and real estate agents only. Each and every real estate investor ought to realize at least the basics of true estate law. In reality, a brief course or a concise book on actual estate law can at times be of fantastic aid (and is generally adequate for understanding the basics of true estate law).

What you need to understand is the true estate law with respect to the legal procedures that you need to adhere to for ensuring a smooth transfer of title to the property you obtain/sell and other related procedures. You require to recognize the fee structure (e.g. stamp duty, etc) that you need to take care of as per genuine estate law. You can also realize the classification of properties and how the fundamental real estate law applies to them. How the commercial and residential properties are treated differently by the genuine estate law. The tax laws with respect to actual estate are one particular of the things that would be of most interest to you. So, your study on real estate law should also cover all the aspects connected to taxes. How mortgages are treated in the point of view of genuine estate law is an additional factor that you really should know about. Then again, the genuine estate law with respect to tenancy really should also be well understood by individuals who wish to rent out their home. back pain relief news

However, you really should not overdo that i.e. you must not begin becoming hysterical about learning real estate law (lest you end up wasting a lot of time in trying to find out every thing about genuine estate law and be left with no time to evaluate your true estate investment). Leave the intricacies of real estate law with the genuine estate attorneys (and to some extent real estate brokers who also are taught actual estate law as element of their course for acquiring broker license).

Understanding the various legal terms referred to in real estate laws can help you in not only enhancing your understanding of actual estate but also support in producing your conversations with actual estate attorneys/agents actually fruitful. You ought to also note that although some of the basics stay the very same, the genuine estate laws vary across several states. Also, true estate laws (specially the tax associated real estate laws) can undergo a change more than a period of time, so you need to have to hold a tab on such modifications. Any big modifications will anyhow appear prominently in news and you will get to know of them anyhow.

So understanding a tiny bit of true estate law can really be helpful (and is, in truth, important).

Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2

Photograph by Doane Gregory ? ? 2011 Summit Entertainment, LLC.

The very title Breaking Dawn, Part 2 hints at what the movie, sadly, reveals to be the case: The Twilight franchise has overstayed its welcome. Splitting the last book in Stephenie Meyer?s teen-vampire series into two separate movies may have been a wise business decision?with guaranteed throngs of adoring Twihards willing to go back for multiple viewings, why not eke out an extra sequel??but it leaves the last film in the series with no place to go.

Of course, one might argue that none of the four previous Twilight films have had any place to go. The world of Twilight is intermittently action-packed, but dramatically static. The story?s central love triangle?mortal Bella, vampire Edward, werewolf Jacob?exists in a state of unconsummated tension on all sides: The purpose of the movies is, in essence, to contemplate the mystery of this holy trinity. This curiously placid, devotional quality is part of what I liked about the first four Twilight films: They lulled the viewer into a somnolent daze that mimicked their spacey heroine?s perpetual love-fog. Breaking Dawn, Part 2, (directed, like its predecessor, by Bill Condon), gets the ?somnolent daze? feeling right, but with the sexual heat gone from the center of the story now that Bella and Edward have done the deed, the only thing left for viewers to contemplate is the sanctity of the nuclear family (which, compared to the lurid joys of human-on-vampire dry humping, seems a pallid prize indeed).

When we last saw Bella (Kristen Stewart), she had finally been changed into a vampire by her long-resistant undead husband, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) in a last-ditch effort to save her from dying while giving birth to their monstrously fast-growing half-vampire/half-human child, Renesm?e. (It?s a portmanteau of her grandmothers? first names, OK?) Breaking Dawn, Part 1e ended on the image of Bella?s eyes popping open on the delivery table, ablaze with a new, unquenchable fire, the irises changed from brown to a coppery red. As Breaking Dawn, Part 2o begins, we look at the world through those transformed eyes: the pollen on a flower, the down on a bumblebee, all appear in extra-sharp relief. Damsel-in-distress Bella has now become superfast, superstrong, and tireless?after she and Edward have vampire sex for the first time, she observes with wonder that she?ll no longer need sleep in between their marathon sex bouts. These are conducted in a Thomas Kinkade-esque cottage that the Cullen coven have provided for the newlyweds behind their more stark, modern house.*

In a plot development that?s consistent with the Twilight series? ongoing propensity for unacknowledged incestuous creepiness, Bella?s lupine ex-suitor Jacob (Taylor Lautner) has now ?imprinted? on her daughter (not in that way! He?s just bound by werewolf instinct to protect her from harm! Renesm?e, that is!). This arrangement, by dissolving the sexual tension between Jacob and Bella, allows the once-dangerous Edward/Jacob rivalry to be subsumed into a stable family unit, with Lautner?s character as a kind of neutered babysitter.

All in all, life as a vampire is pretty sweet, even if Bella has to lie to her father (a severely underused Billy Burke) about her new existential status. But then the Volturi?a kind of Vatican council of vampire high priests, headed up by an impish, scene-stealing Michael Sheen?get a tip about the birth of the half-breed vampire baby and determine that the entire Cullen family must be destroyed.

About an hour in, it starts to occur to you that, for creatures capable of moving through space so quickly they?re perceptible only as gray blurs, the Volturi are taking their sweet time getting from Italy to Forks, Wash. The Cullen clan spends eons standing around in front of modern-art installations, trading fretful observations about the impending vampire civil war. They enlist a militia of rebel vampires from around the world to their side (including a pair of disgruntled immortals still smarting from the Volturi?s seizure of their castles 1,500 years ago) and even get some backup from their erstwhile enemies, the werewolves. By the time the great vampire showdown finally got started, I was good and done with Breaking Dawn, Part 2. But the big action scene is so campily over the top?with one twist so unforeseeable?that it sent me out on a burst of grudging goodwill.

The film?s endlessly drawn-out ending, with its multiple spoken and written iterations of the book?s last word, ?forever,? over an image of the matte-skinned, cultishly beatific Cullens, may be the scariest moment in the whole pulpy yet vital Twilight series?a teenage girl?s fantasy of perfect domestic contentment, frozen in time and doomed to last forever.

Correction, Nov. 15, 2012: This review originally misspelled the last name of Thomas Kinkade. (Return to the corrected sentence.)

NewsMaker - Harvey Norman supports Movember by hosting ...

Give this press release a star rating...

Harvey Norman is inviting everyone to a dodgeball tournament featuring the best of the company?s Mo Bros as well as online giants Google and Facebook.

Harvey Norman is one of a number of companies around the globe taking part in Movember, which sees Mo Bros worldwide cultivate moustaches during the month of November in order to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other men?s health issues. Taking place at the Harvey Norman head office on 16 November 2012 from midday, the dodgeball tournament will see five teams from Harvey Norman itself take part, as well as an (internet) star-studded grudge match between staff from Facebook and Google. Google and Facebook have long been rivals in the online popularity stakes, and what better way to settle the score than by hurling rubber balls at each other in a charity sporting event?

Aside from the big dodgeball game, the staff at Harvey Norman have been taking part by growing mos and using special gold coins received when shopping in store to vote for those they think have the most impressive facial hair. The person with the most votes at the end of the month will win a prize, and Harvey Norman will donate the amount raised by the gold coins to the Movember cause.

Movember can trace its roots back to 2004 when a group from Melbourne, who would later form the Movember Foundation, organised the month of moustache growing as we know it today, their aim being to raise awareness of both prostate cancer and depression in men.

Moustaches and dodgeball arguably go hand in hand: Australian dodgeball team The Emus? Pascal ?Frenchie? Wallace was wearing a mo when he was awarded the prestigious Golden Balls award at the 2012 World Dodgeball Championships, while Ben Stiller?s character in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story also sported one, with it playing a prominent role in his games.

The Emus' captain, Burt Sigsworth says: ?Raising awareness for depression and prostate cancer is an incredibly worthwhile cause. Men?s health is an issue that is close to all of our hearts and given that we have spent the last two and half years making a record number of ball jokes, it?s time we gave something back. ?

Meditation Benefits: Find Out What This Easy Practice Can Do For You

Transcendental meditation has been around since the 1950s, a simple practice that employs the recitation of a mantra to reduce stress and improve focus.

But there has never been a large-scale study on the health effects of the practice even though smaller studies have in the past linked it with everything from lower blood pressure to better school grades.

Now new research shows that African-Americans with heart disease who regularly practiced transcendental meditation were 48 percent less likely to have a heart attack, stroke or die from all causes compared with African-Americans who attended a health education class over more than five years.

The research, published in the American Heart Association's journal "Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes," found that those practicing meditation also lowered their blood pressure and reported less stress and anger. And the more regularly patients meditated, the greater their survival, according to researchers who conducted the study at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

"We hypothesized that reducing stress by managing the mind-body connection would help improve rates of this epidemic disease," said Robert Schneider, M.D., lead researcher and director of the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention in Fairfield, Iowa. "It appears that transcendental meditation is a technique that turns on the body's own pharmacy -- to repair and maintain itself."

Schneider, who noted that the average age of those participating in the study was 59, said he recommends practicing trascendental meditation 20 minutes, twice a day.

"I also would recommend transcendental meditation to white patients or to any other race/ethnicity," Schneider said. "The reason is that the data from other studies indicates that transcendental meditation practice taps into neurophysiological mechanisms present in every human physiology. After all, stress effects everyone's mind and body."

Some six million people around the world have learned the transcendental meditation technique, said Schneider, including celebrities such as Clint Eastwood, Jerry Seinfeld and director David Lynch. Earlier this year, Oprah Winfrey said the practice was part of her overall attempt to "connect with that which is God."

Introduced to the world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1957, transcendental meditation is designed to bring the mind to a state in which there are no thoughts.

For the study, researchers randomly assigned 201 people to participate in a transcendental meditation stress-reducing program or a health education class on diet and exercise.

Those in the meditation program sat with eyes closed for about 20 minutes twice a day, practicing the technique and allowing their minds and bodies to rest deeply while remaining alert. Those in the health education group were advised, under the instruction of professional health educators, to spend at least 20 minutes a day at home practicing heart-healthy behaviors such as exercise, healthy meal preparation and nonspecific relaxation.

Researchers evaluated participants at the start of the study, at three months and every six months thereafter, for body mass index, diet, program adherence, blood pressure and cardiovascular hospitalizations. The trial required approximately 10 years to complete, with the longest follow-up for any one subject being nine years. In the end, researchers found:

  • Blood pressure was reduced by 5 mm Hg and anger decreased significantly among transcendental meditation participants compared to controls.
  • Both groups showed beneficial changes in exercise and alcohol consumption, and the meditation group showed a trend towards reduced smoking. Although, there were no significant differences between the groups in weight, exercise or diet.
  • Regular meditation was correlated with reduced death, heart attack and stroke.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, Schneider notes. But death from heart disease is about 50 percent higher in African-American adults compared to whites in the U.S. To find a local certified transcendental meditation teacher, go here.

Petraeus, Moralizing, & Leadership Obligations ? The Business ...

This past Friday, David Petraeus, a retired 4-star general in the US Army resigned from his position as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He resigned because evidence had surfaced that he had had an extramarital affair.

On the surface, of course, this is just another example of a powerful man succumbing, as all too many seem to do, to the all too common temptation to betray his marital commitments. And, again on the surface, it raises questions about whether private foibles are sufficient reason to think a man unfit for public office. Petraeus himself, in his letter of resignation to President Obama, said he had shown ?extremely poor judgment.? The question that always arises ? remember Clinton/Lewinski? ? is whether poor judgment in personal matters necessarily implied poor judgment in public matters, or whether instead the scandal really just amounts to a puerile bit of titillation.

But the fact is that Petraeus is not just another man, and not even just another man in a leadership position. He was, until November 9th, Director of the CIA, the most important intelligence organization on the planet. He was, in other words, one of the world?s most desirable candidates for blackmail. And so any transgression that could serve as fodder for blackmail is immediately amplified in magnitude. Clearly, marital infidelity is pretty high on that list. Someone in a position like the one Petraeus had has to stay squeaky clean, not for moralistic reasons, but for national security reasons.

And the seedier details that have been emerging seem to bear this worry out, at least to some extent. The woman with whom Petraeus is said to have had the affair, Paula Broadwell, is now said to have sent threatening letters to another woman who she saw as a rival for the general?s affections. That?s not to say that anything like blackmail was in the offing. But it suggests that the Petraeus/Broadwell affair had dark edges to it beyond your standard tale of marital infidelity.

There will surely be, in the coming weeks and months of analysis of this matter, plenty of talk about the demands of leadership and the character and integrity it requires. But what leadership at the highest level really requires is not just character, but an acute awareness of your own weaknesses ? including weaknesses you share with the rest of the human population ? and the ability to foresee and forestall the risks the flow from those.

Professional Service Business Development: What is a Content ...

Professional Service Business Development: What is a Content Marketing Strategy?

In a down economy, competition?among?professorial?service providers such as attorneys, CPAs, and the financial services is at an all time high. ?If you are looking to add a business development advantage that your competition probably hasn?t heard of ? think about a content marketing strategy.

In short, content marketing refers to the technique of crafting and distributing content (relevant to a potential issue) to potential clients with the goal of converting them to a sales function, whether it?s a call, return business, or a click to your website. ?The strategy aspect refers to the content type, schedule, delivery method that you use.

What is ?content??

Content can be anything valuable to a potential client that would cause them to contact or read more about you. ?It can take the form of an article, a newsletter, a tip, video, or a tweet. ?The method of delivery can be anything ? the important thing being to make sure that your content is where your clients are. ?The skill lies in where, how often, and what you publish.

Selecting what to publish

When you are thinking about what type of content your clients are?interested?in, there are a couple of things to take into account. ?First, think about what kind of information is useful and unique to them. ?You don?t want to ?write about issues that have already been widely answered or can be found elsewhere. ?If you are competing with established sources of information, your content will likely become white noise. ?What you need to think about offering is unique content in the form of advice, a?perspective, or new information. ?If you are a CPA and your client base consists of business owners for instance, you may want to write about ?expenses you didn?t know you could deduct?, or ?increasing valuation by ______?. Put yourself in the shoes of your clients and write about the issues that they ask you about or often seem to need clarification on. ?The second main point to keep in mind when authoring content is to keep it as sales-soft as possible.

The goal is to create information that is useful to your buyer and arms them with information that can make them more?successful? ?In return, you will be rewarded with brand awareness and brand loyalty.

Selecting where to publish

Obviously, your audience is the number one factor in selecting where to publish content. ?Try and get your content published where your potential customers are. ?You should use a blend of off-site and on-site destinations, meaning that you can balance newsletter quick tips, social posts, off-site publishing and on-site publishing to help stay front of mind. ?A second consideration is the format and length of your content. ?Again, your audience should be the a contribution factor in these decisions as well. ?If your audience consists of busy CEOs, perhaps a shorter length format that is easy to scan for useful information would be useful. ?For this audience, you may want to use Tweets or quick hit read-and-delete style emails with useful tips or?anecdotal?business stories. ?If your industry is highly-technical, perhaps whitepapers published by newsletter and on-site would help convey authority on your topics. ?No one should understand your client-base better than you, put yourself in their shoes and their attention spans.

Some other thing you should consider when deciding where to publish your content is the strategy that you want to both hit different audiences but also have multiple drips on high-value targets. ?If you have the opportunity to be featured in a well-traveled website or magazine, you should go for it, regardless of the time involved in writing an article. ?The value of a prospect that you have been dripping on through a mailing list or Twitter following seeing your name in a big-name source is?immeasurable. ?Think of it as instant validation of your knowledge and authority ? and if the source is popular enough, chances are good that those on your mailing list will see it. ?If your phone is not ringing off the hook with writing?opportunities, try reaching out to popular industry and demographic sources with article topics and short writeups.

Do some research

Websites such as Alexa.com and Klout.com can tell you about how much traffic (Alexa) and social sharing (Klout) web presences have. ?If you are seeking an outlet in an industry that you may not know well, check those sites to see who are the major websites and?influencers?in the space.

Selecting the frequency with which to publish

The balance here is to temper how often you think you should publish with how often you can publish. ?In my experiences, it is good to publish three-to-four short articles per month or one-to-two longer style articles. ?If you are combining your content strategy with an SEO or social media strategy, it might require you to publish more often.

The overall key here is to come up with a strategy and schedule and stick to it. ?Set goals for yourself and make time to meet those goals. ?As a content marketing strategy matures and begins to gain momentum, you may very well have people reaching out to you for content. ?Make sure that as you gain traction and exposure that you do not let your momentum cool off ? there are always new prospects who haven?t heard about you how can help them yet.

When did humans get smart? Maybe a lot earlier than some thought.

A find in South Africa suggests that humans had mastered the skill of producing small stone blades ? and could pass on the know-how ? as early as 71,000 years ago.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / November 7, 2012

Small stone blades found in a cave along a rugged stretch of South Africa's coast have pushed back by thousands of years evidence for persistent, advanced stone-toolmaking skills in early modern humans, according to a new study.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The results suggest that by 71,000 years ago, these people had long since developed the mental horsepower to tackle production problems and pass their manufacturing techniques to subsequent generations ? a lot earlier than some researchers had thought.

Indeed, to some scientists the find supports the idea that mental abilities associated with modern humans emerged when anatomically modern humans did, about 200,000 years ago, rather than resulting from a genetic mutation cropping up between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago, as others have posited.

The evidence comes in the form of a large number of stone blades that average about one inch long. The blades were excavated from successive layers in soil deposits some 46 feet thick in a cave at Pinnacle Point, on the coast some 210 miles east of Cape Town. The deposits span some 18,000 years.

The oldest bladlets were found in a layer dated to 71,000 years ago and continued to appear in layers representing the ensuing 11,000 years. The same technique was used to prepare the parent stones throughout the period, but the designs evolved over time according to the international team reporting the results in Thursday's edition of the journal Nature.

Pinnacle Point boasts "a very impressive record" of advanced cognitive abilities in early modern humans at the time period the site covers, says Rick Potts, director of the human origins program at the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of Natural History in Washington.

Fleeting snapshots of such creativity appear in east Africa dating back far earlier, he explains. That creativity appears in the manufacture and use of pigments for symbolic and decorative purposes, groups separated by long distances exchanging raw materials, as well as shifts from hand axes to stone-tipped projectiles for hunting.

"You get things that fly through the air. The world has never been the same," he quips.

From disparate sites spanning different, far earlier periods than Pinnacle Point, the evidence suggests that "cognitive capacities and the social capacities had already evolved earlier on," he says. But invention can fizzle if populations are dispersed, making it hard for the innovation to spread, or the inventor gets eaten by some animal along the way as he heads home with his new invention.

The finds at Pinnacle Point, he suggests, highlight the role a persistent regional population with readily available shelter can play in perpetuating and improving a technology.

Pinnacle Point's blades required following some critical steps, according to the international team led by the University of Cape Town's Kyle Brown and Curtis Marean with Arizona State University's Institute of Human Origins.

People would have had to hunt for the right kind of rock, called silcrete. They would have to gather fuel for heat-treating the rock, a process that by then had been used for 91,000 years at the site. Then comes the preparation of cores from the rock, which would be shaped into blades, chipping to make the blades themselves, then reshaping them yet again. Then comes making the wood or bone handles or shafts that would become tools or weapons. Finally, the small blades would have to be affixed to the handles or shafts.

Maintaining know-how like this over an 11,000-year span, along with the skills needed to execute the various steps, would require accurate instructions to be handed down from generation to generation and over a fairly wide region, the team says.

These days, the ability to organize and perpetuate these skills over long periods and across a region would be dubbed "executive function," notes Sally McBrearty, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

Executive function "is an essential component of the modern mind," she writes in an assessment for Nature that accompanied the new results from Pinnacle Point.

The tiny stone blades like those at Pinnacle Point could have affected the success modern humans had as they migrated out of Africa beginning a bit earlier than the oldest dates for the Pinnacle Point blades, she writes. The research team notes that the stone mini-blades could have been used as tips for arrows or spear-thrower darts ? either of which have far greater range than a hand-thrown spear. That would allow hunters, or warriors, to operate at a safer distance from their targets.

If the migrants "were armed with the bow and arrow, they would have been more than a match for anything or anyone they met," Dr. McBrearty notes.

the New School: Gigantic Brewing's Ume Umai beer debuts at ...

Portland's is getting a taste of Japanese pub culture this Friday 11/16 when our first ever Izakaya festival takes place at the Jupiter Hotel. This unique fest shines a spotlight on Japanese art, cuisine, shochu, sak? and beer for NW drink connoisseurs and foodies alike. With Portland's craft beer-minded consumer in mind the festival has wisely teamed up with Gigantic Brewing to create a beer called "Ume Umai" brewed with Black Rice and Plums just for this event.

Izakaya is a Japanese word for pubs, drinking establishments that also serve food and cater more towards the casual drinking class for after work refreshment. Much like the brewpubs and gastropubs we make our 2nd home Japanese pub culture is thriving. While Sake may be the traditional Japanese alcoholic beverage most Izakaya's carry a variety of beer, wine and cocktails, whiskey is also a popular spirit there. Food is an equal accompaniment to the free flowing alcohol, many Izakaya's prefer larger shared plates that fit the communal shared nature of a traditional Izakaya. These pubs in Japan are often marked by a bright red chochin (lantern) like that depicted in the poster to the right. There is something beautifully quaint and romantic about the simple marker of a lantern to signify a warm place for food and drink.

In creating a beer for the Izakaya fest Gigantic owners/brewers Ben Love and Van Havig worked with local restaurant Shigezo. Sourcing enough Black Rice was somewhat difficult, only about 40 lbs were available at the local Asian grocery Uwajimaya and the remaining 44lbs were found at Gobuji in Beaverton.

Using a base of 85% Pilsner malt they left 15% of the mash for Black Rice that was prepared in huge cookers at Shigezo. "We had them leave the rice "as is" - not rinsing it, so that we got as much color and starch as possible," relates Brewmaster/Owner Ben Love. The cooked rice was added by the handful to the mash and stirred in. The enzymes of the mash worked their magic and extracted more sugar than thought from the rice resulting in a higher gravity than expected. "After the mash, the rice looked relatively the same, but when you ate it, it wasn't sweet. All the sugar was gone"

With just that 15% of the mash being black rice the wort picked up enough color to take on an orange-amber hue. Ben Love tells me that the Black Rice contributed an aroma similar to White Tea as well as a savory mushroom flavor and subtle black licorice-like spiciness.

Last week I joined brewers and volunteers to help slice around 1,260 pounds of Black Plums to be added to three 270 gallon wine totes and topped off with the beer which is how the beer earns it's unusual name "Ume Umai". Plums are a staple of Japanese culture and come in many varieties, "Ume" is the word used for plum and "Umi" means literally "yummy".The "Ume" is processed in different ways before eaten and is more tart than the western plum. The most popular plum dish is the "Umeboshi" a pickled plum typically enjoyed with cooked rice much like the ingredients of the beer. There is also "Umeshu" which is a sweet alcoholic plum wine.
Each Plum was hand sliced in half, the fruit brand sticker removed and then crushed by hand and tossed into the big plastic totes. We did not concern ourselves with the plum pit, that went in too. The black plum skin is tart, the inside sweet and modest crushing and slicing reveals a sweet meal for the still active eager yeast already pitched into the beer. Brewers hope that the dark skin of the fruit will contribute even more color to the finished ale and maybe even help it take on a purple tone.
Try the fruits of their labors on Friday at the Jupiter Hotel. I recommend purchasing tickets in advance, they are affordable http://celebrateizakaya.com/

iPhone 5 vs. Nexus 4: Which phone should you get?

iPhone 5 vs. Nexus 4: Which one should you get?

Apple has released the taller, thinner, faster, lighter, brighter iPhone 5 and now Google has struck back with the LG Nexus 4. So what's a gadget geek to do? Apple owns the patent (we think maybe literally...) on elegant, futuristic hardware, consumer-friendly software, and the top content service in the world. Google and LG have brought almost every spec you can imagine (and a few you couldn't!), have the most powerful, customizable software, and the best internet services on the planet. How can you possibly decide between them?

Let's take a look...!

Google/LG Nexus 4

Google/LG Nexus 4

LG starts the Nexus 4 off with a massive 4.7-inch IPS display at 768x1280. That's essentially 720p with its belt let out. The sides are soft-touch, and the back is fully decked out in something called Crystal Reflective Process, which makes it look like you're holding a star field in your hand. There's an 8 megapixel, 1080p camera on back that shames the rather poor shooter on Samsung's last-generation Galaxy Nexus, and a 1.3 megapixel, 1080p camera on the front. A monstrous Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor powers the whole thing, but while it has all the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC radios you'd expect, so far there's absolutely no LTE version in sight.

Android 4.2 shares the same Jelly Bean code name as it's predecessor, but comes with a few great new features like Photosphere which wraps panoramas around you. There's also be lock screen widgets, an improved Gmail app, fast access to radio toggles, and since it's a Nexus, easy access to developer settings. That goes along with all the other marquee Jelly Bean features like the Google Now voice assistant and actionable notifications. Pretty much everything that makes Android so powerful, flexible, and customizable.

In the Nexus 4 review Phil Nickinson of Android Central summed it up like this:

The Nexus 4, LG's first phone in Google's premier line, easily is the best "stock" Android phone thus far, and it's the best in the Nexus line since HTC's Nexus One. The hardware is more top-of-the-line than we're used to in the Nexus platform. The design improves on what LG's done with its own Optimus G. And the software improvements in Android 4.2 make the platform that much more impressive. The phone's not without compromise, but it's also an easy phone to recommend, especially for the price.

The Nexus 4 comes in 8 and 16GB versions. If you buy it direct from Google, you can get it unlocked for $299 or $349. If Google doesn't sell (read: subsidize) it in your area, however, you're looking a paying a bunch more.

Apple iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 has a newly re-designed unibody aluminum chassis to allow for a bigger 4-inch screen in a phone that's 12% smaller by volume. It's taller but not wider, thinner and also lighter. That 4-inch screen also uses in-cell technology to combine the touch sensor right into the LCD. At 1136x640 and 326ppi, it's still backlit LED, and still IPS, and technically the best, most advanced panel on the planet for now. Apple also rolled their own, manually-set Apple A6 processor this time, based on ARM v7s, for amazing performance and excellent power management. There's still no NFC, but there is CDMA, HSPA, and international LTE.

iOS 6 comes loaded on the iPhone 5, and includes a new, controversial Maps app, some great extensions to Siri, deep Facebook integration, Passbook, and enhancements to FaceTime, Mail, Safari, Photo Stream, Panorama, and Accessibility. And because Apple makes both the hardware and the software, there's no integration, no added interface layers, and a seamless experience overall.

iTunes has the biggest international content footprint, so if you're into buying your music, TV, and movies, there's a better chance Apple will take your money than anyone else. They also have the free iCloud service for backup, restore, and sync, as well as Apple Retail Stores with Genius Bars which, if you ever break your phone, you'll absolutely consider a killer service.

In the iPhone 5 review, I summed it up as follows:

Taller, thinner, faster, lighter, brighter; the iPhone 5 represents nothing more nor less than the latest, relentless iteration on the Platonic ideal Apple has been striving towards for almost a decade. Redesigned in every way but shape, compromised but true to its purpose, the iPhone 5 is once again the best iPhone Apple has ever made, and one of the best phones ever made. Period.

The iPhone 5 comes in 16, 32, and 64GB versions. The price on-contract is $199, $299, and $399, unlocked and off-contract is $650, $750, and $850.

Apple iPhone 5 vs. Google/LG Nexus 4: The bottom line

The story of iPhone and Android is one of those classics that just seems to keep getting remade. It's one of precision vs. power, elegance vs. enormity, usability vs. customizability, and Apple's ecosystem vs. Google's ecosystem.

The Nexus 4, if you have a Google Play Store in your country and can buy it directly, is the best bang for the buck in high-end smartphones these days. (Although you'll still end up paying for your carrier plan, basically making any device savings irrelevant.) However, it won't come with more than 16GB of storage, and it won't come with LTE. (And don't let them fool you, I get 50Mbps down at the local coffee shop, HSPA+ is lucky to get half that.) As of right now, however, the Nexus 4 is pretty much the ultimate Android developer/tweaker phone.

The iPhone 5 is more expensive, but it's also built, glitter aside, like nothing else on the planet. You can get it with up to 64GB of storage and with LTE in most places that have LTE. And for most people, most of the time, iOS and everything that comes with it remains the best choice. The iPhone 5 is still king of the mainstream.

The old cliche remains true. If you want something that works the way you want it, get the Nexus 4. If you want something that just works, get the iPhone 5.

Does a Flashlight Ever Need to Be More Than Just Bright?

Jetbeam's Digital Display series of flashlights incorporate a simple screen that provides more accurate info on the torch's current mode and remaning battery life—at least compared to just a color-changing LED. A '9' means the battery is at full capacity while a '0' means it's time for new batteries. More »
