(AP) ? Bombs striking Shiite neighborhoods, security forces and other targets across Iraq killed at least 26 people Sunday, officials said. It was the latest instance in which insurgents launched coordinate attacks in multiple cities across the country in a single day, apparently intending to rekindle widespread sectarian conflict and undermine public confidence in the beleaguered government.

The deadliest attack came in the town of Taji, a former al-Qaida stronghold just north of Baghdad, where three explosive-rigged cars went off within minutes of each other. Police said eight people died and 28 were injured in the back-to-back blasts that began around 7:15 a.m.

In all, at least 94 people were wounded in the wave of attacks that stretched from the restive but oil-rich city of Kirkuk in Iraq's north to the southern Shiite town of Kut.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the violence, but car bombs are a hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq. The Sunni militant network has vowed to take back areas of the country, like Taji, from which it was pushed before U.S. troops withdrew last December.

Shortly after the Taji attacks, police said a suicide bomber set off his explosives-packed car in the Shiite neighborhood of Shula in northwest Baghdad. One person was killed and seven wounded. Police could not immediately identify the target.

"So many people were hurt. A leg of a person was amputated," lamented Shula resident Naeem Frieh. "What have those innocent people done to deserve this?"

And in Baghdad's bustling Karrada neighborhood, a parked car laden with explosives went off next to a police patrol, killing a police officer and a civilian, other officials said. Eight other people were injured. The blast was followed minutes later by another parked car bomb as people gathered, killing three civilians and injuring 12 others, they added. Secondary bomb blasts targeting those coming to help the wounded are a common insurgent tactic.

Elsewhere in the country, another suicide bomber drove a minibus into a security checkpoint in Kut, located 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad. Three police officers were killed and five wounded, Maj. Gen. Hussein Abdul-Hadi Mahbob said.

And in Iraq's north, another policeman was killed when security forces were trying to defuse a car bomb parked on the main highway between the cities of Kirkuk and Tuz Khormato, said Kirkuk police chief Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir. A second policeman was wounded in the blast, Qadir said. Kirkuk is about 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

In mid-morning, another parked car bomb went off next to a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims in the town of Madain, killing three Iraqis and injuring 11 others included seven Iranians, another police officer and health official said. Madain is a mainly Sunni area located 20 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Baghdad.

In the town of Balad Ruz, 75 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Baghdad, a parked car bomb targeted a passing police patrol, killing two policemen and injuring seven others, a police officer and health official said. And in the nearby town of Khan Bani Saad, 15 kilometers (nine miles) northeast of Baghdad, yet another parked car bomb exploded near a market and killed one civilian and injured nine others, they added.

Two Iraqi soldiers were killed in the town of Tarmiyah, 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Baghdad, when their patrol hit a roadside bomb, another police officer and health official said. Six other people, including four civilians were wounded.

Health officials in Taji, Tarmiyah and Baghdad confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to release information.

Violence has dropped since the height of Iraq's bloodshed a few years ago, but Iraqi forces have failed to stop the attacks that continue to claim lives almost daily.

Senior central government officials were not available for comment.

Neighborhood is a fly haven - Shakopee Valley News: Local ...

Updated from yesterday's print edition of the Shakopee Valley News

?One, two, three. Go,? Ryan Peterson yells to his kids before they swing open the patio door and rush into neighbor Rick Wymer?s home on Thursday night, trying to avoid the black flies that swarm the deck.

Peterson ? who answered his own door with flyswatter in hand when visited by a reporter last week ? has had it with the infestation that has his household hostage during the summer and fall due to the spreading of manure in a farm field adjacent to their cul-de-sac on Karner Drive in Shakopee.

?We have probably a couple thousand flies in each of our garages. We kill hundreds of them in our houses a week,? Peterson told the City Council in a plea for help from him and his neighbors during the public comment portion of last week?s meeting.

Residents of Karner Drive have hung fly-catching buckets from trees, sprayed their homes with repellent and depleted Lowe?s Home Improvement store of fly strips to deal with the infestations they say began after a local farmer began spreading manure on the leased field after the July 4th holiday. They say they see the tractor out there two to three times per day.

Although they?ve been told the situation was bad the fall before they moved in, Peterson and Wymer say this is the worst it?s been since they purchased their homes in late 2009.

Joe Peitz said his children don?t like playing outdoors any longer. He worries about the health hazard from such large volumes of flies.?

This summer, food for the neighborhood block party was kept in a ?quarantined tent? to prevent it from spoiling.

Without knowing the name of the dairy farmer, neighbors tried to talk to the driver of the manure-spreading tractor.

?I have approached him, but he slowed down, gave me a scowl and took off down the road,? said Peterson. ?He?s not being a friendly neighbor.?

Neighbors contacted police this summer with their concerns, but say the farmer, John O?Loughlin, turned the soil just once, and manure continued to be left on city streets used to access the 50-acre field. City Hall was their last stop after contacting the state Health Department, Scott County officials and city staff.

Without an ordinance in place governing feedlots in the city and given the state?s right-to-farm act, City Council and staff said they were likely limited in what they could do, but would look further into it.

O?Loughlin initially didn?t wish to talk about the neighbors? concerns when contacted by a reporter, saying the matter would be ironed out at the next City Council meeting. He denied spreading manure multiple times per day and said?the tractor driver that was approached by a neighbor was a hired hand, not him.

"I don't really care what they said," he said of the discussion at the last meeting. "I don't care to talk about it.?

After meeting with city officials on Monday though, O?Loughlin called back and said he plans to move the manure-spreading away from Karner Drive homes and take other steps to improve the situation. He said flies were an issue this year due to the unusually early harvesting of oats.

?We are definitely trying to solve the problem, but we still have got to fertilize our land,? he said.

?FIELD OK?

State pollution and county feedlot officials recently visited the field. Despite the frequency of manure spreading, they found that the amount put down was acceptable, noting the farmer will still likely have to apply commercial fertilizer to get enough nutrients into the ground before planting.

While residents are concerned about the daily spreading of manure, it isn?t being applied thickly, said Scott Schneider from the Scott County Soil and Water Conservation District, noting that he?s never witnessed an over-application on the field. He explained that hard manure isn?t as nutrient dense as liquid manure, which is injected right into the soil.

?They can spread on that field quite a bit before they?ve covered the whole field,? he said, noting that the width of the spreader is narrow.

With the current high price of chemical fertilizer, hard manure is ?really valuable? to farmers as a fertilizer right now, explained University of Minnesota Extension educator Josue Hernandez.

Although routinely turning the manure (called ?disking?) into the field ? which has vegetation growing on it ? would lessen the flies, it could cause soil erosion and possibly dust problems along County Road 83 right now due to the dry weather, explained Scott Schneider.

O?Loughlin rents the field from his neighbor, Roberta Schneider.

She said she hasn?t been contacted by the neighbors who?ve raised the recent concerns, ?but I have heard it before.?

?People move into a farming area and then complain about the farming practices,? she said, noting that the soil was tested in the past. ?It?s all within legitimate bounds.?

FLIES

Neighbors say they have no issues with farming, the spreading of manure two to three times per day.?

Peterson said this was not his experience growing up next to a farm field in Waseca, Minn., and he was told by a visiting relative, who works in the ag business, that the frequency of spreading is not normal.?

?We?re not against farming,? Peterson said. ?We like that it?s a field.?

Wymer feels like the field behind their homes is being used as a dumping ground since the farmer has limited acreage to spread manure around his own farm.?

?We wait all year for summer and it?s miserable,? said Wymer, commenting that a dairy farm probably has less flies than his neighborhood.

O?Loughlin said flies were an issue this year because of the oat crop, which was harvested earlier than normal due to the unusual weather.

?We hit that fly season head-on,? he said, noting that flies are worse in warm weather.

Next year, he will go back to planting corn in the field, which will be in the field until mid- to late-September, minimizing the fly issue. He doesn?t anticipate planting oats again before the land is finally developed.

IMPROVEMENT PLAN?

In consultation with the city, O?Loughlin has now developed a plan to try to improve the situation for the remainder of the fall.

  • He will stop spreading manure behind the homes and move the operation north near a gravel pit.
  • When manure spreading is finished on the field, it will be disked in.
  • The tractor will no longer exit the field on Thrush Street, which should lessen manure on the streets, and instead leave on County Road 83.
  • The tractor will continue entering via Thrush because the left turns onto County Road 83 are too dangerous.

?Hopefully, we are headed in the right direction ? or a hard freeze,? said Shakopee Mayor Brad Tabke said in an email to Karner Drive residents, outlining these steps. ?It is a frustrating situation that won?t be perfect until the land is developed, so we?ll be working with this issue perennially and hope to find the best ways to work together.?

O?Loughlin has offered to switch to commercial fertilizer if Karner Drive residents are willing to foot the estimated $2,000 bill.

Tabke also noted that since flies can travel long distances, limiting the manure applications to a certain distance away from the homes likely wouldn?t help much.

Scott Schneider said there have been similar issues of conflicting land uses with farming in the county.

Residents would like the city to consider some rules for farming since county regulations do not apply.

Tabke said the city plans to look into what other cities do to deal with farming in city limits.

Officials gather for contract ratification vote

IRVING, Texas (AP) ? NFL officials on the verge of approving a new contract say they're excited to get back to work.

Officials started arriving Friday at a Dallas-area hotel to discuss and vote on an agreement reached with the league late Wednesday. Some planned to fly directly to their assigned cities for Sunday's game.

The deal must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members.

Some said they thought Monday night's Packers-Seahawks game, which ended in chaos after a call in the end zone gave the Seahawks the winning touchdown instead of a Packers interception, provided the final push toward a settlement. Many fans commentators ? and players in the league ? thought the call was botched.

Monday night's call brought the three-week furor over replacement officials to a fevered pitch.

"It's all history now," head linesman Tom Stabile said. "For us, it was a benefit. It may have been the straw that broke the camel's back."

Line judge Jeff Bergman said he could see the play coming as he watched at home. He noticed that players were starting to take advantage of replacement officials struggling to keep control of the game.

"The last play of the game was something that was going to happen sooner or later," Bergman said. "It gave us and the league an opportunity to get together and hammer out a deal that was going to get hammered out anyway."

Referee Ed Hochuli, who led weekly tests and conference calls for officials to stay sharp during the lockout, declined to say whether the replacements made the right call.

"You really don't want to see that," Hochuli said. "You don't want to see the controversy. You don't want to see teams lose games that they shouldn't have lost, if indeed that's what happened. We're not making a judgment on that."

After three weeks of games marred by mistakes, the regular refs said they were heartened by the support they've received from fans, players and coaches ? even if they don't expect it to last very long now that they're back.

"You're not really beloved by the public. You're tolerated. And to see that type of reception that our guys got last night was really heartwarming," said Bergman, who will head to Green Bay for Sunday's game, one week after Packers players ripped the replacements for calling Monday's disputed play a touchdown.

"After the euphoria of the moment wears off, probably sometime early in the second quarter, it'll be back to regular NFL football mode," Bergman said. "Players will be questioning our judgment, our ancestry. Coaches will be screaming at us. And it'll be life as back to normal on Sundays."

One crew returned to work Thursday night. Cheered from the moment they walked onto the field, the men in stripes ran a smooth and efficient game as the NFL's lockout of officials came to an end with the Baltimore Ravens' 23-16 win over the Browns.

"To just be applauded by 50,000 people prior to anything happening, it was something that kind of chokes you up," referee Gene Steratore said. "It was a very special feeling."

When Al Shabab's last stronghold falls, will a guerrilla war follow?

Kenyan soldiers launched an attack on Kismayo, the last stronghold of Islamist group Al Shabab in Somalia. But many worry that if Kismayo falls, Al Shabab may revert to terrorist attacks.

By Mike Pflanz,?Correspondent / September 28, 2012

In this December 2011 file photo, two Kenyan army soldiers shield themselves from the downdraft of a Kenyan air force helicopter as it flies away from their base near the seaside town of Bur Garbo, Somalia. Kenya's military said Friday, Sept. 28, that its troops attacked Kismayo, the last remaining port city held by Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabab insurgents in Somalia, during an overnight attack involving a beach landing.

Kenyan soldiers today launched their long-awaited offensive on the last remaining stronghold of Somalia?s Al Qaeda-allied Islamists, Al Shabab, with a pre-dawn assault that caught the enemy by surprise.?

Attack boats ferried hundreds of Kenyan troops onto the beaches north of Kismayo under cover of darkness, and soldiers advanced to the city?s outskirts before Al Shabab could mount a defense.?

Fierce fighting broke out, and has continued throughout the day, with Kenya?s military saying it already controls part of the city, and residents there reporting the battle has yet to enter its sandy streets.?

Kismayo, with a population estimated at 200,000 people, is Al Shabab?s last major stronghold after a series of attacks by African Union (AU) peacekeepers forced them from other Somali towns over the past six months.? It is widely assumed the Kenyan troops, operating under the AU mission in Somalia (AMISOM) will outgun the Islamists and that the city will fall within 48 hours.?

If successful, this would mark one of the AU?s most significant military achievements and leave Al Shabab without control of any major urban center in southern Somalia. But it may result in pushing the Islamist group toward more guerrilla tactics, changing the state of play in Somalia and further punishing the population with ongoing violence.

?It will become a kind of asymmetric warfare, with more suicide bombings and more attacks targeting whoever eventually controls Kismayo,? says Andrews Atta-Asamoah, Horn of Africa analyst at the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, South Africa.?

Al Shabab is dependent on revenue from taxing imports and exports passing through the city?s port, and losing control over Kismayo could leave the Islamists bankrupt, sources say.

Some embassies in Kenya?s capital of Nairobi are already discussing the increased risk of potential Al Shabab revenge attacks after today?s operation, says one diplomatic source who asked to remain anonymous for security reasons.

'An enemy that is known'

Colonel Cyrus Oguna, spokesman for Kenya?s military described today?s assault, noting the element of surprise in their attack worked to the troops advantage. ?Maritime forces from Kenya, allied with Somali national army troops, came ashore at 2 a.m. and that gave us the element of surprise that meant we saw no resistance initially,? he said.?

People living in the city ? 300 miles south of Mogadishu, Somalia?s capital, and 100 miles north of the border with Kenya ? said Islamist defense forces did, however, fight back.

?The town is not yet captured,? says Jamac Ukun, contacted by telephone in Kismayo.?Mr. Ukun says Al Shabab has deployed fighters. ?I can hear the fighting, there are heavy weapons.?

Ukun notes there is no fighting in town, but ?helicopters are flying over the town and they have launched several missiles on various bases. Many young men have taken their guns and are taking part in the fighting.?

Al Shabab?s radio station, Al Andalus, was back on air after about a week of silence. Many speculated the quiet meant senior commanders had already decided to leave Kismayo. Today, the station called for the city?s residents to join the fight to repel the coalition troops, Ukun says.?

Hussein Hassan, a clan elder in Kismayo, said that Al Shabab was "defending the remaining part" of the city, but that the fighting sounded like it was becoming more sporadic.?

An Al Shabab spokesman said that they would ?defeat the invaders, God willing,? and keep control of the city.

More than 12,000 people have fled the city in the three to four weeks leading up to today?s offensive, the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, said.?

If today?s operation is successful and Al Shabab is defeated, pushed into the countryside, the victory may be bittersweet.

?They are going to change from an enemy that is known, to one that is unknown, in terms of where they are based, how many fighters they have, and what are their tactics,? says Mr. Atta-Asamoah, from the Institute for Security Studies.?

Social bullying prevalent in children's television

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A new research study led by an Indiana University professor has found that social bullying is just as prevalent in children's television as depictions of physical aggression.

The study, "Mean on the Screen: Social Aggression in Programs Popular With Children," which appears in the Journal of Communication, found that 92 percent of the top 50 program for children between the ages of 2 and 11 showed characters involved in social aggression.

On average, there were 14 different incidents of social aggression per hour, or once every four minutes.

While physical aggression in television for children has been extensively documented, this is believed to be among the first studies to analyze children's exposure to behaviors such as cruel gossiping and manipulation of friendship.

"Social aggression was more likely to be enacted by an attractive perpetrator, to be featured in a humorous context and neither rewarded or punished," wrote Nicole Martins, assistant professor of telecommunications in the IU College of Arts and Sciences. "In these ways, social aggression on television poses more of a risk for imitation and learning than do portrayals of physical aggression."

Martins, the lead researcher on the study, and Barbara Wilson, professor of communication at the University of Illinois, conducted a content analysis of the 50 most popular children's shows according to Nielsen Media Research from December 2006 to March 2007. In all, 150 television shows were viewed and analyzed.

Careful attention was given to what was portrayed in the cases of social aggression, whether the behavior was rewarded or punished, justified or committed by an attractive perpetrator.

The findings suggest that some of the ways in which social aggression is contextualized make these depictions particularly problematic for young viewers.

"These findings should help parents and educators recognize that there are socially aggressive behaviors on programs children watch," Martins said. "Parents should not assume that a program is OK for their child to watch simply because it does not contain physical violence.

"Parents should be more aware of portrayals that may not be explicitly violent in a physical sense but are nonetheless anti-social in nature," Martins added.

The vast majority of socially aggressive incidents -- 78 percent -- were verbal: words to hurt the self-esteem or social standing of another character on the program. The most common types of social aggression were insults (52 percent) or name-calling (25 percent). Other common types of negative behavior shown were teasing (10 percent) and sarcasm (9 percent).

Only about 20 percent of all socially aggressive incidents were non-verbal in nature and typically employed a mean face (36 percent) or laughter meant to lower the self-esteem of another character (31 percent). Rolling eyes, finger pointing and simply ignoring the other person also were common.

"We also coded whether social aggression was directly perpetrated at the target -- such as making a mean face -- or indirectly perpetrated behind the target's back -- such as spreading a rumor," the authors wrote. "The vast majority of socially aggressive incidents (86 percent) were enacted directly at the target. Rarely were socially aggressive incidents perpetrated behind the target's back."

While previous research has demonstrated that gossip is one of the most common forms of social aggression in real life, it was rarely seen in children's television shows analyzed for the study. Martins and Wilson concluded that gossip, due to its indirect nature, may have been seen by program producers as being too subtle for advancing a story's plot.

Unfortunately, this renders the rest of the world, including his immediate surroundings, quite dark. What if you could combine the two images ? the dark one that shows the torch clearly, and the light one that shows everything else?

Think of high dynamic range as wearing night-vision goggles and sunglasses at the same time, with none of the downsides.?You can see?highlights and shadows that would be blown out or too dark to see otherwise.?

To achieve this,?the team's?EyeTap helmet uses a pair of cameras?take?multiple exposures of the same view and combine them in real time, in such a way that no part is too dark and no part is?too light.?

As you can see in the video, that means that the welder can clearly see not only the super-bright torch, but the hot metal it's touching and the rest of the object as well. This could greatly improve not just the quality of the welder's work, but the safety of his workshop.

The video below demonstrates the futuristic-looking helmet in a few situations; there's a good comparison at 1:45, and more everyday situations towards the end.

It's not just for welders. If the technology were developed, a driver would never be blinded by the glare of the sun, and a soldier would never miss a mine hiding in a shadow. The possibilities are really very exciting.

Of course, the device itself will have to be adapted somewhat before you can wear it in the car; it's clearly a bit bulky at the moment. But this "mediated reality," as the narrator describes it, is potentially very powerful. More information and much supporting documentation can be found at the EyeTap site, or at Road to VR.

Antipsychotic drugmakers target marketing dollars at D.C. Medicaid psychiatrists, study indicates

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The D.C. Department of Health (DOH) has released a study by George Washington University School of Public Health & Health Services (SPHHS) indicating the high levels of marketing by antipsychotic drug manufacturers to Medicaid psychiatrists in the District of Columbia.

Antipsychotics are one of the top-selling drug classes; In 2010, top antipsychotic manufacturers spent more than $25 million on marketing in Washington DC. Among 26 psychiatrists receiving at least $1000 from top antipsychotic manufacturers in 2010, 7 (27%) were Medicaid providers. Medicaid psychiatrists, however, received a disproportionate, share of industry largesse, receiving two-thirds (66%) of gifts and payments. In 2008 (the most recent data available),antipsychotic use by Medicaid recipients was especially high in the nation's capitol, with approximately 1 in 10 recipients receiving a prescription -- a rate five times higher than the total national population.

A large proportion of Medicaid recipients are children under the age of 18. Antipsychotics can cause sedation, weight gain, diabetes, and other adverse effects. Previous studies have shown a high rate of inappropriate off-label use (for conditions the FDA has not approved). Some adverse events may be more likely to occur in children and young adults.

Lead researcher Susan Wood, PhD, Associate Professor at SPHHS, said, "Pharmaceutical marketing affects which drugs are prescribed. Prescribing decisions can have a profound effect on both state coffers and population health."

"Antipsychotics are clearly being used in patients who are not psychotic," said Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, collaborator on the report and Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Physiology at Georgetown University Medical Center.

The report is in fulfillment of AccessRx, the District of Columbia's 2006 law requiring public disclosure of pharmaceutical marketing expenditures spent on all health care providers by every pharmaceutical company that markets in the District. The DOH's Health Regulation and Licensing Administration commissioned the study by SPHHS on the 2010 data. The amounts paid by antipsychotic manufacturers to DC Medicaid and non-Medicaid psychiatrists are included in the report, along with the effects of the new public records on prescribing and marketing trends.

Access to the report is available on DOH's web site, http://doh.dc.gov/node/158762

RIM posts Q2 earnings: $2.87 billion in revenue, still a $235 million loss

Research in Motion headquarters

RIM may have given us hope that its transition to BlackBerry 10 has turned a corner, but that doesn't mean the dark clouds have entirely broken just yet. The company's second fiscal quarter saw it generate $2.9 billion in revenue, a slight gain over last quarter, while it posted a net loss of $235 million -- again better than expected, but not the best news it could deliver. Waterloo's main challenge was holding on to its smartphone base. While RIM did expand the total BlackBerry user base to 80 million, its phone shipments dropped from 7.8 million to 7.4 million and were braced by shipments of just 130,000 PlayBooks, or half as many tablets as were delivered in the spring.

The sunshine is mostly found in the total picture. RIM says it's still on track to deliver the first BlackBerry 10 phones in early 2013; while the smartphone maker is bracing for an operating loss in its ongoing third quarter, the higher revenue and reduced losses suggest to CEO Thorsten Heins that RIM is getting its fiscal house in order before BlackBerry 10 (hopefully) renews interest. Full details of the company's financial performance are available after the break.

Are Fat Men More Trustworthy?

Photo illustration of Mitt Romney as an obese man.

Photo illustration by Natalie Matthews-Ramo. Photograph of Romney by Nicholas Kamm/AFP/GettyImages. Photograph of large man by Pavel Losevsky/iStockphoto.

Julius Caesar was a chubby-chaser. If Will Shakespeare is to be believed, he would stride about the Forum making his predilections known to all and sundry:

Let me have men about me that are fat,
Sleek-headed men, and such as sleep o' nights.

While fat was where it was at for old Jules, when it came to skinny dudes, he was positively discriminatory:

Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look;
He thinks too much; such men are dangerous.

Back in the day, heft was associated with gravitas and power, leadership, and trust. Fat blokes, by their very physiques, projected monumental indestructability. Even when they were rotting with syphilis (Henry VIII) or prone to decapitating their spouses (Henry VIII, again) they were somehow preferable to those malevolent skinny fellows (Richard III). Obese monarchs and porky politicos loomed large on any podium or battlefield, and one imagines that when they delivered speeches their words boomed and reverberated to tremendous effect. Enough to make your jewelry rattle.

It?s hard to imagine a scrawny geezer having the same kind of impact. Imagine if Winston Churchill, instead of looking like Falstaff, were to have resembled Igor Stravinsky, or a Giacometti sculpture. I cannot help feeling his we-will-fight-on-the-beaches addresses to the nation would have been much less comforting.

Today?s landscape is different. Great fat men are thin on the ground. This represents something of a paradox. Obesity rates among the masses are soaring, but there are far fewer rotund bold-facers than there used to be. This is especially true in the world of entertainment. Yes we have Philip Seymour Hoffman?is he fat or just ?husky???and the incredible James Gandolfini, but that?s about it. Some celebs like Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill debuted as fat and then sneakily lost the weight in order to get more roles.

Back when there were fewer overweight people around, being fat was a vaudevillian novelty. Heavyweights like W.C. Fields and Fatty Arbuckle were seen as special and, yes, as a barrel of laughs. As the century progressed, the entertainment industry became jammed-to-bursting with unapologetic tubsters, Hitchcock and Orson Welles among them. The list is a large one: Robert Morley, James Robertson Justice, Stubby Kaye, Rod Steiger, late Brando, y mas.

Here are my top five massively memorable movie moments from the golden age of galloping gourmands:

1. My all-time favorite silver-screen chubster is Sydney Greenstreet of Casablanca fame. No actor today could hold a candle to big Syd, and certainly none are as fat. In addition to being a great character actor, Mr. Greenstreet created a whole new genre: the extremely evil fat man. As the aptly named Mr. Gutman in The Maltese Falcon, he manages to be even more disturbing than Joel Cairo, the perfumed poseur played by Peter Lorre, and was deservedly nominated for an Academy Award for his efforts. The best scene is shot from in under Gutman?s gut:

2. The fabulously fat Syd occupies two of my picks. As Sheriff Titus Semple in Flamingo Road he sets about destroying honky-tonk-gal-made-good Lane Bellamy, played by Joan Crawford. She expresses her gratitude by?there?s no other way to describe it?slapping the shit out of him.

Justin Langer predicts bright Test future for Glenn Maxwell ? Cricket News Update

Australia?s batting coach Justin Langer has backed all-rounder Glenn Maxwell to move upwards in the Australian cricketing hierarchy, claiming the right-hander has the technique to carve out a spot for himself in the Test team.

?... fundamentally he's got a very, very good technique. He plays with a straight bat, he's got very fast hands and he's quite a student of the game,? observed Langer. ?He's going to be a good player. I love his attitude. I hope he gets six hundreds to really push his name up (for Tests).?

Currently in Sri Lanka for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012, Maxwell made his debut for the national side earlier this year, during Australia?s limited-overs series played against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates during August/September.

The competent right-handed batsman, who also has the ability to double as a handy part-time off-spinner, was named in the squad on the strength of a successful stint with Hampshire in the 2012 Friends Life t20, and superb domestic performances for Victoria. Among his more prominent outings was the fastest ODI half-ton in Australia's domestic history (50 off 19 deliveries against Tasmania), scored in February 2011.

The 23-year-old continued to impress with the transition to the Australian national side ? he managed composed scores of 38, 28, and an unbeaten 56 during the 3-match ODI series, and subsequently earned a call-up for the World T20 2012 squad.

Despite his success in the shorter formats of the game ? he has 124 runs from 4 ODIs, and 353 runs from 18 list A matches ? Maxwell harbours aspirations of making it to the Test team. With a current record of 770 runs and one century from 11 first-class matches, the 23-year-old has expressed the desire to add to his tally once he returns to Australia, in a bid to earn a call-up to the Test squad.

?I know a lot of people earmarked me as a Twenty20 and one-day player,? Maxwell said. ?Once I get back to Australia and play some first-class cricket I'm hoping I can put some big scores on the board that people just can't refuse.?

CEOs May Find It Lonely At The Top, But Not Stressful

It's lonely at the top ? and we often assume it's stressful too. Golf outings and retreats are designed to help executives unwind, but it turns out their underlings may be far more stressed out. A new study has found that as leadership rank increases, stress levels decline. Melissa Block speaks with Jennifer Lerner of Harvard University, the study's lead author.

State, local jobs won't recover until 2017: report

(Reuters) - State and local government employment won't return to its pre-recession peak until early 2017, following widespread public sector layoffs that have continued this year, global information company IHS Global Insight said in a report on Monday.

Total employment by states and cities could grow 3.2 percent to 19.9 million in 2017 from 19.3 million in 2012 - an addition of 620,000 jobs, IHS Global Insight said.

Across the United States, the recession cut into property tax revenue collections, prompting layoffs that shrank the ranks of state and local public employees from their peak of nearly 19.9 million in late 2008, IHS data showed.

"We do see that the structural imbalance in government budgets is slowly evaporating," said IHS's chief regional economist Jim Diffley. "There can be expansion once again."

Predicted gains in employment for school teachers, firefighters, police and other public workers would come slowly, with state and local government payrolls not getting back to peak levels until the beginning of 2017, Diffley said.

The sector is expected to expand even more in the following years, to nearly 21 million by 2022, or 8.7 percent growth from 2012 levels, the report showed.

PRIVATE SECTOR GROWTH TO BE ROBUST

Public sector gains still would not match expected growth in private sector employment. Overall, all nonfarm employment in the U.S. is expected to grow 8.6 percent, comprising nearly 11.5 million jobs, in the next five years, IHS reported. The federal government is likely to lose 9.1 percent of its employees over the same time, the report found.

The professional and business services industry is expected to add the biggest number of new jobs with nearly 21 percent growth over the next five years, which amounts to nearly 3.7 million jobs.

The construction industry is on track to grow 39 percent, by more than 2.1 million jobs, and the health services industry could add nearly 2.3 million more jobs, for 13.2 percent growth, over the same time, IHS said.

The report was released in conjunction with a meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

IHS also examined 15 metro areas around the country, finding that two areas in Texas - Laredo, as well as Dallas and surrounding Fort Worth and Arlington - are likely to have the greatest growth in state and local government payrolls over the next five years, 10.5 percent and nearly 9 percent, respectively.
